Pittsboro, NC - Mariana Poole and Michael Brooks, seniors at Northwood High School, have been recognized as National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. This academic program began in 1955. Poole is the daughter of Marjorie Rohbach and Michael Poole. Brooks is the son of Deborah Wechsler and John Wayne Brooks.

The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test acts as the initial screening process for 1.3 million students each year. Of that number 50,000 students with the highest scores qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Poole and Brooks are completing applications that include a student essay, a school recommendation, and scholastic record information from the Northwood counseling department. These will be due October 12.

In February the approximately 15,000 finalists will be notified. Between March mid-June, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation notifies approximately 8,200 finalists that they have been selected to receive a Merit Scholarship® award. The awards come in three types: $2,500 single payment scholarships, corporate-sponsored awards, and college-sponsored awards.
