Sanford, NC - The Northwood Marching Charger Band completed a stellar season with their final competition appearance on Saturday, November 1, in Sanford at the Brick Capital Classic. Family, friends, faculty members, alumni, and Board of Education members attended this annual event to support the band. As part of the band’s outreach activities, about a dozen middle school band students joined the Charger Caravan, riding the activity bus, learning about the marching band program, and cheering for the band in the stands.

"It was so nice to have the middle school students join us today. I hope that they can spread the word as to what fun they had and the great experience it would be to be in the marching band at Northwood. The past few years we have seen lesser numbers coming in from the middle schools and this type of outreach will hopefully help everyone understand that we need these young musicians to continue through high school.," said Cottrell.

The Chargers gave a polished performance of Psychoses in the late afternoon. Following the 9 AAA/AAAA band performances, representatives from each band assembled on the field for the awards ceremony.

In the AA class, NHS received 1st Place Percussion (scoring 92 points) and 1st Place Visual Ensemble (also scoring 92). They received 2nd Place awards for Music and Drum Major Catherine Barthoff. With a final score of 88.5 (one of their best of the year), they were named AA 2nd Place Band. Receiving their fourth Superior Rating, the 2008 Northwood Marching Chargers complete the season as an All-Superior band.

"After losing 22 seniors last season I never thought that we would get to the level we are now at so quickly. But these students have worked hard and they deserve the accolades for their achievements. This was a good band show. The whole program was one that the students really got into and enjoyed working on. I would like to thank our community for it's support of the Marching Chargers. It means a great deal to these kids when they see you in the stands and hear you yelling for them. If I may, I would like to mention that we are in the beginning stages of acquiring new uniforms and if you would like to donate cash to our cause it would be greatly appreciated and a tax write off for you," said Cottrell.

The Northwood colorguard members now turn their attention to establishing a new Winter Guard program. Winter guard ensembles choose music soundtracks and create a show learning choreography that includes equipment, dance, and theatrics. Competitions are judged in the categories of Movement, Equipment, General Effect, and Ensemble Analysis. The competition season for winter guard follows the Marching Band season. colorguard instructor Allen Wiley will direct the new winter guard program. Try outs for the new winterguard will be November 12th and 13th from 3:30-5:30 at Northwood.

Complete competition results for the 2008 Marching Charger Band.
