Pittsboro, NC - Kristen Norwood, a senior at Northwood High School, is a recipient of an award from the State Employees' Credit Union (SECU) scholarship program. Norwood, who will attend East Carolina University in the fall of 2006 as a dance education major, will receive $10,000 payable in $1,250 semester increments.
“I taught Kristen for three years in dance and always appreciated her individualism. Because of her academic strengths and her dedication as a student, she was selected to attend Governor's School as a sophomore in dance. Her respect and school spirit for Northwood makes her an ideal student who is involved in every aspect of our school including clubs, sports, and the spring musical. She is a positive energy in our school. She also has strong family support,” said Amy Salter, Assistant Principal at Northwood.
The “People Helping People” scholarship program recognizes academic achievement, but has as its primary purpose to recognize leadership and community involvement. Recipients must be state residents, seniors in North Carolina public high schools and have been accepted to one of the sixteen constituent campuses of the University of North Carolina. These students demonstrate scholastic achievement with a maintained 2.5 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
