Pittsboro, NC - Northwood High School (NHS) Marching Charger Band members Charlotte Harrison, Ryan O’Daniel, Katherine Absher, and Trey Edwards completed a week of activities focusing on percussion instruction and marching technique at the Matt Savage Percussion Camp in Ellerbe, NC. O’Daniel was the winner of one of the camp’s Most Improved Snare Drummer Awards.

Now in its sixth year in NC, the camp focuses on rudiments, technique exercises and rhythm reading. In battery-only drumlines of snares, quads, and bass drums, campers work on cadences and create a full-length performance with drill for the camp finale.

In addition to working with Savage, Director of Marching Percussion at UNC, other counselors included Alan Keown, founder of a similar camp in Oregon, and Amy Savage, Director of Marching Percussion at Duke University. Savage is also the percussion consultant, arranger, and instructor for the NHS Marching Charger Band. She is featured in an interview in the May/June edition of Halftime Magazine.

All NHS Marching Chargers will be back on the field next month. The NHS band camp begins Monday, August 10, with two weeks of rehearsals to begin preparation for the 2009 competition program, Escape. Visit the NHS Marching Charger website when the season begins to see photos and get news about the competition schedule and other band activities.
