Pittsboro, NC - Eugene Cottrell, director of bands at Northwood High School, is the 2011 recipient of the Jackson Parkhurst Award for Special Achievement. This marks the third time the North Carolina Symphony has given this award to an outstanding state music educator. He will receive $500 and be honored at a Symphony concert on Saturday, June 4, during a reception before the Symphony’s “Around the World in Eighty Minutes” concert at the Cary Koka Booth Amphitheatre.

The award is named in honor of Jackson Parkhurst, the Symphony’s former director of education, who helped shape and grow the orchestra’s education program.

School district staff, current and former band students, and band parents nominated Cottrell. He came to Northwood in 1999 and since then his bands have won numerous awards.

"Just to be nominated for such a prestigious award makes me feel as if my contribution to education truly means something to my students and their parents. To have so many students, parents and colleagues secretly gather together and sing my praises to the North Carolina Symphony just proves that what we do as Arts Educators is very important. I couldn't be more honored to have received this award. It is something, like the Mr. Holland's Opus Award, that I will carry with me forever,” said Cottrell.
