Chapel Hill, NC - Woods Charter School kicks off the new school year with several new teachers.

Erin Collins, 3rd grade - Ms. Erin Collins comes to Woods after recently completing a master’s program at NC State in elementary education. She fills the spot left open when Ms. Jen Shah moved with her family to Ohio this past summer. Ms. Collins’s first career was in the field of sports marketing.

Summer Delciotto, high school theater arts - Last year Ms. Summer Delciotto co-led our middle school theater program as a parent volunteer. She joins the high school faculty this year as we are finally able to offer a theater class during the school day in high school!

Dena Floyd, Athletics Director, high school health/PE - Having played four years as a varsity soccer player at the University of Florida, Ms. Floyd spent her first years out of college training and coaching athletes at Stanford University and NC State University. She recently completed her master’s degree in liberal studies with a concentration in leadership and non-profit management. She takes over the role previously held by Ms. Shelba Levins, who left Woods late in the summer to become Athletics Director at Jordan High School in Durham.

Aimee Haygood, high school math, 9th grade advisor - Ms. Haygood has spent the bulk of her career teaching math at Chapel Hill High School, where she served for ten years. She earned her master’s degree in educational technology in 2011, and she is a nationally board certified teacher. Her new classroom will be in the space previously occupied by Mr. Charley Stewart, who retired from teaching in June..

Katie Lewis, middle school Spanish, 6th grade advisor - Ms. Katie Lewis earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from NC State University. While earning her master’s degree in Spanish language and literature, she also taught beginning Spanish classes to undergraduates. She realized her love for working with middle schoolers when she organized and led Aventura Animal, a bilingual summer day camp in Lumberton.

Misty Peeler, 5th grade - Ms. Misty Peeler joins our faculty to fill a position opened very recently when Melissa Green left to pursue a research position at UNC. Ms. Peeler taught previously at Timber Drive Elementary and North Chatham School.

Julie Rosen, 4th grade - Ms. Julie Rosen rejoins the Woods family after a two-year hiatus. Ms. Rosen worked for many years in the elementary at Woods and even served as the administrative liaison for the elementary team at one point. For the past two years she has lived and taught in California but returns to her Chapel Hill home now and fills the position left open by Duff Coburn’s retirement.

John Sheridan, high school math, 11th grade advisor - Most of Mr. John Sheridan’s teaching has been at Northwood High School, where he served as math department chair. Mr. Sheridan holds a master’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and he is a nationally board certified teacher. His most recent teaching assignment was at the NC School of Science and Mathematics. His new classroom will be in the space previously occupied by Ms. Megan DiMaio, who moved to New York in July.

Changes of Assignments

Ms. Christene Vaughan will continue her role of leading the music program for Woods Charter middle school students. This coming year she will also begin teaching the middle school band as Mr. Gregg Gelb will not be returning. Mr. Christopher Beeson will add three sections of middle school chorus to his schedule (and the bulk of his time will remain with IT and EC).

Woods Charter School utilizes a unique blend of principles built on the three programs of academic study that make up the Woods curriculum: the new NC Standard Course of Study (Grades K-12), The Core Knowledge Program (Grades K-8) and the Advanced Placement Program (Grades 9-12). In the elementary grades (K-4), the focus is on instilling self-esteem, teaching appropriate social skills and building a core knowledge of fundamental facts and concepts across all subjects of the curriculum.
