Pittsboro, NC - The week of August 14 has been a busy time for new teachers in Chatham County Schools. Traditional teacher workdays began on August 17, but the Human Resources Department sponsored a new teacher induction program for earlier in the week to assist the teachers in being prepared for the beginning of the school year.

Over fifty teachers who are new to the profession and lateral entry teachers who are finalizing their teacher licensure participated in a seminar on Monday and Tuesday, August 14 and 15, at Horton Middle School in Pittsboro. The sessions on Monday focused on two topics: 1) team building relationships, and classroom culture; and 2) structuring classrooms and schools for success. On Tuesday the educators continued the theme of structuring classrooms and schools for success.

On Wednesday, August 16, all teachers who are new to the school district attended the final day of the program, entitled “Essential Elements of Instruction and Classroom Management.” During the morning they learned about local policies and procedures from various central office departments in twenty-minute rotating sessions. After lunch the teachers met with their mentors and heard a motivational speaker. There are slightly over 100 new teachers in the school district this year.

Many of the new employees commented on the helpfulness of the sessions and how diligently the Human Resources staff, school administrators, and central office staff had been in making them feel welcome to Chatham County Schools.

Teachers and other ten-month employees across the school system returned to work during the optional teacher workdays on August 17 and 18 and the required teacher workdays on August 21-24. Countywide staff development sessions for teachers that are specific to grade levels and subject areas are scheduled for Monday, August 21 at various sites.

Students return to the fifteen schools across the district on Friday, August 25.
