Joel County has been named Principal of Northwood High School. He was among applicants interviewed by a committee that included Northwood faculty, Northwood parents, and central office staff. County was approved by the Board of Education on November 18 and will begin working in Chatham County Schools on November 29.

“I am excited about joining the Northwood family in celebrating its successes and to begin the process of collecting input from students, staff, and parents to determine areas to address that will allow us to move up to the next level,” said County.

“The search process for a Northwood principal has been a semester-long endeavor. We greatly appreciate how Sam Greene, a retired school administrator, came to Northwood as Interim Principal. He will work closely with Mr. County during the administrative transition between now and the second semester. We look forward to the Northwood students, staff, families, and community getting to know Mr. County. His excitement about becoming a member of the Charger family combined with his broad background in several subject areas makes the future a bright one for Northwood High School,” said Dr. Larry Mabe, Superintendent of Chatham County Schools.

County is currently the Career Development Coordinator at Green Hope High School in Wake County Schools. County began his career in Colorado where he taught mathematics, science, business education, and computer science. During his time as a teacher, he also coached football and wrestling. After moving into school administration, County served as a District Career and Technical Education Director, Assistant Principal, and Principal, all at the high school level.

County holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Northern Colorado, completed the Principal Licensure Program at Colorado State University in 1998, and earned a Master of Education in Administration from Colorado State University.
