A water main break in the Moncure area on Thursday morning, October 14, left Moncure School without water and forced the school to close at noon. No other schools in Chatham County were affected by the water problem.

Moncure staff began calling families as soon as district administrators made the decision to dismiss the single school early. The school has approximately 225 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grades.

The water break was in the vicinity of Old US 1. Its location caused challenges for county officials in repairing it because of nearby high voltage power lines that had to first be located before repairs on the water line could begin.

Child Nutrition Director Laurie Monticello worked with the Chatham County Health Department and Moncure cafeteria staff to provide a lunch for the students and staff before the school closing. The regular lunch schedule was started a half hour earlier to accommodate all classes. The lunch consisted of tacos, grilled cheese sandwiches, individually packaged orange slices, and mixed greens. All of these items could be prepared without needing water.
