Moncure, NC - Moncure School collected approximately 1000 food items. These food items were donated to the CORA (Chatham OutReach Alliance) food pantry and to the Chatham County Schools FUEL Up (Food Until Everything Looks Up) program on Friday, December 7.

Fifth grade students organized a school-wide collection after being inspired by the book Bud, Not Buddy that they were reading in a literature circle with Melissa Hamm. These fifth grade students challenged the other classrooms to see which class could collect the most food items in one month. The prize for the class with the most donations would be a pizza party.

CORA volunteers Jim Abrahamson and Marci Whittaker accepted the donations and spoke to the students in Nicole Tinsley's fifth grade class about how CORA works and how it benefits the community. CORA is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to acquiring and distributing food to Chatham County residents who have a need for temporary community support to keep themselves and their families fed. Each year schools across the county support CORA through various activities.

Chatham County Schools is teaming with school and community partners in an effort to ensure that students have food at times when school is not in session. This food program is called Fuel Up. The program sends food home in backpacks with students on weekends and during breaks in the regular school year months. The program currently serves a portion of students in Chatham County Schools and will expand with time.
