Moncure has team in Battle of the Books

Yanceyville, NC - Moncure School of Chatham County competed with eleven other counties in the Region 5 Battle of the Books competition. The competition was held at the Caswell County Civic Center in Yanceyville, NC. Eleven games were played. Moncure won three out of eleven games.

Twelve middle schools participated in the Region 5 North Carolina Battle of the Books competition that was held April 3, at the Caswell County Civic Center in Yanceyville. After eleven rounds of play, C. W. Stanford Middle, Orange County Schools, placed first. Second place winner was Guilford Middle, Guilford County Schools. Third place went to Woodlawn Middle, Alamance-Burlington Schools.

Battle of the Books is sponsored by the North Carolina School Library Media Association for students in grades 6, 7, and 8 in public and private schools. Students participate in a quiz bowl style tournament that tests their knowledge of a list of books selected by the NCSLMA Battle of the Books Committee. Tournaments are held at the district, region and state levels with only one team from each level proceeding to the state event.

Participating schools in Region 5 were Woodlawn Middle, Alamance-Burlington Schools; South Asheboro Middle, Asheboro City Schools; N. L. Dillard Middle, Caswell County Schools; Moncure Middle, Chatham County Schools; Brown Middle, Davidson County Schools; Guilford Middle, Guilford County Schools; Lexington Middle, Lexington City Schools; C. W. Stanford Middle, Orange County Schools; Uwharrie Middle, Randolph County Schools; Rockingham County Middle, Rockingham County Schools; Chestnut Grove Middle, Stokes County Schools; and Southeast Middle, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.

This year's list of 27 titles included the classics, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain and Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery. New favorites were Eragon by Christopher Paolini and Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko.

The state Battle of the Books competition will take place May 5, at UNC in Greensboro.
