Area students in Mathcounts competition

Raleigh, NC - On Saturday, February 24, students from Moncure School and North Chatham School were among students from thirty-four schools to compete in a Mathcounts Central Carolina Chapter competition at Athens Drive High School in Raleigh. Mathcounts is a national math enrichment, coaching and competition program for middle school students.

Participants competed in the first two rounds as individuals and in the third round as a team. Teachers, parents, coaches and others were permitted to observe the team round. The first two rounds were closed to everyone but the mathletes.

The Moncure team members were eighth graders Weston Greene, Ben Hobbs, Michael Mougios and Joseph Wright, and seventh graders Emily Bethea, Dakota Dial, and Christopher Harper.

The North Chatham team consisted of eighth graders Alyssa Knoll and Brooke McKenna, seventh grader Jordan Knott, and sixth graders Tristan McGregor, Daniel Royer and Phillip Straughn.

Maureen Prys, a teacher at Moncure and Horton, coached the Moncure team. Eileen McKenna, a parent volunteer, and Daniel DeGuzman, a teacher at North Chatham, coached the North Chatham team.
