Pittsboro, NC - Chatham County Schools held a dedication ceremony for its newest school, Margaret B. Pollard Middle School, on Sunday afternoon, January 30.
Superintendent Robert Logan welcomed attendees and was joined by local dignitaries in a ribbon cutting outside the main entrance of the school.

The ceremony then moved into the multipurpose room where Principal Justin Bartholomew recognized Pollard students, staff, and families and Assistant Principal Lisa Jordan led everyone in The Pledge of Allegiance. Superintendent Logan gave remarks and then introduced others who gave comments. They were:

  • Deb McManus, Chair, Board of Education
  • Brian Bock, Chair, Board of Commissioners
  • Joe Hackney, Minority Leader of the House of Representatives
  • Senator Bob Atwater, NC Senatorial District 18
  • Miriam Pollard, daughter of Margaret B. Pollard
  • Kristy Yule, Regional Vice President, Marketing, Newland
  • Robbie Ferris, CEO/President SFL+A
  • Steve Johnson, Senior Vice President, John S Clark Company, LLC
Mrs. Pollard's daughter, Miriam Pollard, made the following statement about the school being named for her mother: "What an unbelievable honor of distinction? The school being named in honor of my mom to represent her sacrifices of her life's work is representative of who she was in life. My mom was a life long learner and an investor in those who would come after her. Margaret Bryant Pollard, would be humbled by this occasion, filled will gratitude and encouragement that her love for the universe would be duplicated in others that graduate Pollard Middle School. I can hear her say in the recesses if my mind, "never in my wildest dreams could I imagine such a delightful measure of gratitude by the citizens and the school board of Chatham County, I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you so very very much."

Bartholomew and artist Max Roy Stawsky then unveiled a painting of Mrs. Pollard. Mrs. Pollard’s daughter, Miriam, donated the painting to the school. It will hang in the library media center. She and Logan then unveiled the official portrait of Mrs. Pollard that will hang inside the school entrance. The portrait was a digital oil painting by Lawrence Price, a Chatham County Schools retiree who is also a local photographer.

At the end of the program, Bartholomew invited guests to visit the campus in small groups with twenty-four Pollard students serving as tour guides.
