Chatham County, NC - From November 13 to February 14, elementary students at North Chatham School participated in the Jump Rope for Heart event. The long-term project included curriculum-related health discussions and physical activity. Jump Rope for Heart is a national program that promotes the value of physical activity and helps elementary students learn how they can contribute to the welfare of their community.
In Doug Horton's physical education class, the students discussed heart attack and stoke and how these conditions have affected their lives through people they know and love. The classes jumped rope once or twice a week for three months.
Over the course of the event, the students in kindergarten through fifth grade raised over $7,537.90, far surpassing their goal of $1,500.00. The first year the school participated, it raised $700.00 Jump Rope for Heart. The proceeds will go to the American Heart Association.
Barnes Powell, a third grader, collected the most money, bringing in a total of $725.00. 400 Club winners were Melanie Wann and Tyeshia Baldwin from Lisa Lowing's fifth grade class. 300 Club winners were Alex Buie from Danny Gallagher's fourth grade class and Dana Walker from Sherry French's fifth grade class.
The overall event concluded on Valentine's Day with a celebration that involved over 500 elementary students at North Chatham. Each grade level was given forty minutes to perform jumps in a variety of categories. Following the celebration students received stickers, certificates, jump ropes and other prizes.
Horton extended a special thanks to parent Lorrie Morro for the time and effort she donated during this event as well as other parents and staff who supported this event.
