Siler City, NC - On November 15, 2005, during National Education Week, Jordan-Matthews High School in Chatham County will host a College Application Day. Each senior at Jordan-Matthews High School will be encouraged to apply to college through the CFNC website if he or she has not done so already. This event is supported by the administration, faculty, students and staff at Jordan-Matthews, the University of North Carolina Office of the President, GEAR UP North Carolina, and the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC).

Jordan-Matthews High School is a participant in the statewide GEAR UP North Carolina program. GEAR UP is a pre-college initiative funded by the US Department of Education. The goal of GEAR UP North Carolina is to increase the number of North Carolina students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. North Carolina has just received a second statewide GEAR UP grant and will provide pre-college services to students, parents, and teachers in 35 school districts in 2005-2006.

College Foundation of North Carolina is the state supported effort to increase the numbers of students who are prepared for and enroll in college. In GEAR UP schools, all students are expected to establish an account on the college planning website,, and are encouraged to apply to college online. Jay Palmer, GEAR UP NC Coordinator for Chatham County Schools, has spent the last two weeks making certain that all seniors had updated their CFNC accounts and completed an online career assessment prior to the College Application Day. He anticipates that approximately 100 students will complete their college application on Nov. 15. Laptop computers will be available for all students and staff from Jordan-Matthews High School, CFNC, and GEAR UP North Carolina will be on hand to assist with the application process.

If you have questions about the event, please contact Susan McCracken (919) 357-2713.
