Bonlee Quiz Bowl team wins competition[Apr. 17, 2005] On April 12, the seventeenth annual Junior Quiz Bowl was held at Chatham Central High School with grades 5-8 competing for the 2005 championship. The Junior Quiz Bowl Competition was conducted as part of Chatham County Schools 2005 Media Celebration, sponsored by the school system's library media programs. The Junior Quiz Bowl team at Bonlee emerged as the winner of the competition defeating Bennett with a final score of 245 to 145. Students demonstrated their knowledge in a variety of areas, answering questions from the fields of science, math, language and many others.
“The Unlikely Trio” visits Siler City Elementary[Mar. 25, 2005] Siler City Elementary students in grades K-3 enjoyed a performance by three members of the National Symphony on Tuesday, March 15. The presentation by “The Unlikely Trio” consisted of an ensemble of a flute, oboe and harp. The performance began with an introduction of each instrument by each performer and then a few “mystery melodies” were played for the students to try and name.

Highlight on school at-risk staff[Mar. 25, 2005] Over the past few years, schools have become more aware of the problems students bring to school and how those problems affect learning. Chatham County Schools has been aware of this for several years and has employed both a Student Assistance Counselor and Student Assistance Social Worker to assist the counselors and school administration in addressing the needs of these students.

2005 Governor's School selections announced[Mar. 18, 2005] Seven students in Chatham County Schools are among high school students from across the state to be selected to attend the 2005 Governor's School. The students, their schools, and the subject area focus in which they were accepted are as follows:
School system has information about student transfer request policy[Mar. 16, 2005] Parents/Guardians of students requesting a transfer assignment are required to annually submit an application for transfer of school assignment for each child in order for the transfer assignment to be considered for renewal. This annual assignment request is reviewed by the Board of Education with regard to the following criteria: the school requested has sufficient population space for the student assignment; the student has maintained an acceptable record of attendance; and, the student has maintained an acceptable record of behavior.
Horton band student invited to All-State Honors Band[Mar. 14, 2005] Each year, the North Carolina Bandmasters Association sponsors three honors bands for students in North Carolina, one middle school (grades 6-8) band and two high school bands (grade 9-10 and 10-11). These bands allow music educators to diversify their instruction, giving high-achieving students an opportunity to be challenged and recognized. Joe Graybeal, a French horn player in the seventh grade at Horton, was invited to audition for the All-State Honors held on March 5.
Chatham Central Chamber Singers earn excellent rating at contest[Mar. 10, 2005] The Chatham Central High School Chamber Singers recently traveled to Meredith College in Raleigh to perform at the North Carolina Large Ensemble Festival, a regional festival designed for high school choirs to perform for master adjudicators and receive ratings based on their performance. The Chamber Singers group is under the direction of CCHS choral director Nathan Street.
Perry Harrison students qualify for state level championship[Mar. 9, 2005] Several students from Perry Harrison School have qualified for the State Level of the Reader's Digest National Word Power Challenge Championship. These students are invited to compete with other students from across North Carolina in the State Championship to be held on Friday, March 18 at 3:30 p.m. at Weddington High School in Matthews, NC near Charlotte.
County schools schedule kindergarten registration for 2005-2006 school year[Mar. 9, 2005] Elementary schools in Chatham County Schools have scheduled their kindergarten registration processes for the upcoming school year. Registration will be held for children who will be five years old on or before October 16, 2005 or are not presently enrolled in a public kindergarten and will be six years old on or before October 16, 2005. It is most helpful to the schools if parents provide the school with the child's social security number; however, it is not mandatory.
Jordan-Matthews plans rising ninth grade orientation night[Mar. 8, 2005] On Tuesday, March 15, Jordan-Matthews High School will host an Orientation Night for rising ninth graders. All incoming freshmen for the 2005-2006 school year and their parents/guardians are encouraged to attend. The event will be held from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the school auditorium.
New York Giants linebacker visits North Chatham[Feb. 10, 2005] During the last period of the day on Wednesday, February 9, students in grades five through eight at North Chatham School were treated to an assembly with Kevin Lewis, starting middle linebacker with the New York Giants, as guest speaker. Lewis was introduced by Dr. Malbert Smith, who works at Duke and is a North Chatham parent. When Dr. Smith introduced him to the audience, he noted that Lewis was also a member of the National Honor Society being a strong student academically.

Career Day held at Perry Harrison[Feb. 9, 2005] On February 4, 2005, seventh and eighth grade students from Perry Harrison participated in a career day. Students heard speakers talk about eight different jobs and what they do in a typical day, how their careers evolved, and educational and training requirements for their jobs.

Board of Education begins superintendent search[Feb. 8, 2005] The Chatham County Board of Education is moving forward with the selection of the next superintendent of Chatham County Schools. Although North Carolina personnel laws do not allow the board to release the identity of the candidates to the public, the board carefully considered input from members of the community that was shared during the three Superintendent Search Public Forums and in the Superintendent Search Staff and Community Surveys.
