Bonlee School has new principal[Jun. 30, 2005] The assistant principal at Chatham Middle School has been named the new leader of Bonlee School. Tracy Fowler will replace Ronnie Joyce, who retired. Fowler has been the assistant principal of Chatham Middle School in Siler City since 2001. She is licensed in elementary education, school counseling and middle grades social studies.
Former Chatham Schools superintendent to partner with MHAworks[Jun. 27, 2005] MHAworks, PA, a Carolinas-based architectural firm, announces a strategic partnership with Larry Mabe, recently retired Superintendent of Chatham County Schools. Mabe will work with MHAworks as an educational consultant for their educational design studio projects. He is the President of Educational Leadership for Success, LLC.
Spring 2005 Dean’s List announced at NC State University[Jun. 25, 2005] North Carolina State University Chancellor James L. Oblinger has announced that 5,267 undergraduate students earned Dean’s List honors at NC State during the spring semester. To make the Dean’s List, students must earn an academic grade-point average of 3.25 or higher if they are carrying 15 or more hours of course work, or a 3.5 grade-point average if they are carrying 12 to 14 hours.
Local students earn UNC degrees, Dean’s List recognition[Jun. 25, 2005] More than 4,600 students earned bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral or professional degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill during the May 15 commencement ceremony, which featured remarks by the Rev. Peter Gomes of Harvard University. In addition, more than 5,200 Carolina students were recognized for outstanding academic achievement by their selection for the dean’s list for spring 2005.
State releases writing test scores[Jun. 24, 2005] The outcomes of the North Carolina Writing Assessments have been released by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in a Preliminary Report of Student Performance. The tests were piloted in 2003 and are given to students in grades four, seven, and ten. Results of the writing tests are not currently calculated into the state ABCs ratings. The tenth grade writing test results, however, count for a portion of the high school Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standings under the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) model. Students statewide took the writing test on March 1.
Community Independent School hires business director[May 24, 2005] The Community Independent School (CIS) Board of Directors is very pleased to announce that Holly Baddour of Chatham County will be the school's first, full-time Business Director starting June 27th. After conducting a national search, it was determined the best candidate was already a part of the school community. Holly's eldest son currently attends CIS.

Four high school students accepted to NC School of Science and Math[May 12, 2005] Three students from Northwood High School and one from Jordan-Matthews High School have been accepted and plan to attend the NC School of Science and Math this coming school year. They were among 3000+ applicants, approximately one tenth of whom were accepted.
Bus drivers recognized by school transportation department[May 9, 2005] Chatham County Schools honored its school bus drivers during an annual recognition evening on Thursday, April 28, in Siler City. The event was sponsored by the Chatham County Schools Transportation Department with bus drivers and school administrators as guests.
Mock wreck staged at Jordan-Matthews[Apr. 26, 2005] Juniors and seniors attending Jordan-Matthews gathered recently near the bus parking lot to watch as a mock wreck unfolded. The mock accident was part of “Keys to Life,” a demonstration designed to show the effects of drinking and driving. Students stood behind police tape and watched as local emergency personnel worked to free the victims of the staged wreck.
Two Jordan-Matthews seniors win teaching fellows scholarships[Apr. 25, 2005] Two members of the Class of 2005 at Jordan-Matthews High School have been selected as recipients of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Scholarship. Chelsea McManus and Kynlon Snipes were selected for the four year scholarship given to high school students who will pursue a degree in education at a four year college or university in North Carolina. Both plan to study elementary education.
Essay and poster winners honored at luncheon[Apr. 24, 2005] “Save Our Soil,” and “Soil, It's Alive” were just a few titles of posters created by Chatham County students in grades three through six for the annual Soil and Water Poster contest. Students participating in the contest drew posters and wrote essays for this year's theme “The Living Soil.” Students used many different drawing techniques to show the importance of soil and what it provides for plants and animals.
Chatham names new school superintendent[Apr. 22, 2005] The Chatham County Board of Education is pleased to announce that it has hired Dr. Ann Hart as the new superintendent of the Chatham County Schools. Dr. Hart is the current superintendent of the Catawba County Schools here in North Carolina, a position she has held for the last five years. Prior to becoming superintendent of the Catawba County Schools, Dr. Hart served as the Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools for seven years.

Bonlee student wins first place at the State Science Fair[Apr. 19, 2005] On March 18, eighth grade Bonlee student Sarah Jaeger won first place at the North Carolina Science Fair in the Junior Technology Division at Meredith College. Her project's title was The Effect of Different Water Temperatures on the Level of Dissolved Oxygen in Water. She researched how temperature affected the amount of dissolved oxygen in water for her project.
Local school bands to perform[Apr. 18, 2005] On Tuesday, April 26 at 7 p.m., the Perry Harrison School Band will be performing several selections in the multi-purpose room for the community to help raise money for Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. The North Chatham Band will perform a variety of tunes for the community on Thursday, April 28 at 7 p.m. in the multi-purpose room.
