[Sep. 2, 2005] In light of national fuel concerns that have the potential to affect North Carolinians, officials in Chatham County Schools are looking for ways to conserve fuel use across the school system. There are ninety-six yellow school buses that travel daily routes across the 707 square mile county. Chatham County Schools receives a load of 7,500 gallons of diesel fuel approximately every two weeks.

[Aug. 30, 2005] On Tuesday, August 30, the College Board released the 2005 results of high school SAT results. The testing is a new version that debuted in March of 2005. 276 high school students from Chatham County Schools took the SAT in 2005. As a group their mean math score was 499. As a group their mean verbal score was 488. The two areas combined for a total mean score of 987.

[Aug. 24, 2005] Chatham County Schools has embarked on a computer initiative that will put Apple iBook laptops into the hands of all high school teachers this fall and give all students in grades nine through twelve access to multiple carts with classroom sets of iBooks. The ambitious program is called a 1 to 1 Learning program.

[Aug. 11, 2005] The Gear-Up program sponsored its annual summer transition program for rising ninth graders in Chatham County Schools at Jordan-Matthews High School from July 11-28. Seventeen students voluntarily participated and were able to experience a view of high school and college life.
 
New principal reports to SAGE AcademyNew principal reports to SAGE Academy
[Aug. 11, 2005] SAGE Academy, the alternative high school in Siler City, welcomed a new principal, Ingrid Bimbo, to campus on Thursday, August 4. Bimbo follows retiring administrator Wade Lehman in the position. She will also be the administrator in charge of the Paul Braxton Pre-K program, housed at a different location in Siler City.

[Aug. 5, 2005] Staff of Chatham County Schools will welcome students back to school on Thursday, August 25. Prior to that day, schools in the district will hold open houses to orient students and parents to the 2005-2006 school year.
 
State releases ABCs dataState releases ABCs data
[Aug. 5, 2005] The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has released results of the ABCs accountability model. North Carolina has this plan in place to emphasize educational basics and high educational standards. Current results are based on testing data from the 2004-2005 school year.
 
Driver education class available at Jordan-MatthewsDriver education class available at Jordan-Matthews
[Jul. 29, 2005] A driver education class will be offered at Jordan-Matthews High School in Siler City from August 8 through August 19. The classes, held on weekdays during that two week span, will be in the school auditorium from noon until 3:00 p.m.
 
Northwood athlete recognized for sportsmanshipNorthwood athlete recognized for sportsmanship
[Jul. 29, 2005] Julia Wood, a junior student-athlete at Northwood High School, benefited from exemplifying sportsmanship as a member of the Charger cross country, basketball, and track teams. Wood received $500 in a drawing in which her name was entered as a result of all Northwood athletic teams having no ejections during the 2004-2005 school year.

[Jul. 27, 2005] The three high schools in Chatham County Schools have planned summer dates for students to handle details to prepare them for the beginning of the 2005-2006 school year. High school students will be able to pick up their daily class schedules prior to the first student day of school which is Thursday, August 25.

[Jul. 22, 2005] A complete list of Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) results has been released by the North Carolina Department of Instruction. In Chatham County Schools eleven of fifteen schools made AYP for the school year 2005-2006. Schools that made AYP were Bennett, Bonlee, Chatham Central, Chatham Middle, Horton Middle, Moncure, North Chatham, Northwood, Perry Harrison, Siler City Elementary, and Silk Hope.

Public invited to meet new Superintendent of SchoolsPublic invited to meet new Superintendent of Schools
[Jul. 14, 2005] The Chatham County Board of Education has scheduled two receptions for the public to welcome Dr. Ann Hart to Chatham County Schools. The community, businesses, families, and school system employees are invited to come and meet the new Superintendent of Schools during either of these floating receptions, held on opposite sides of the county for the convenience of residents. [Jul. 12, 2005] Northwood High School sophomore Hart Wallace Phillips and senior Tyler Mason were two of 1,800 student council leaders and student activity advisers who recently attended the sixty-ninth annual National Association of Student Councils (NASC) National Conference. Frazier Segues promoted to principal of Silk HopeFrazier Segues promoted to principal of Silk Hope
[Jul. 1, 2005] Janice Frazier, who has been the assistant principal at Silk Hope School for the past four years, will become the principal of the school on July 1 following the retirement of longtime principal Rob Tharp. Frazier came to Chatham County Schools in 2001 after spending the first portion of her career in Guilford County.
