Jordan-Matthews student receives National Hispanic RecognitionJordan-Matthews student receives National Hispanic Recognition
[Oct. 13, 2005] Chris Reyes, a member of the senior class at Jordan-Matthews High School, has been recognized by the College Board's National Hispanic Recognition Program. The Program, established in 1983, is a College Board program that provides national recognition of the exceptional academic achievements of Hispanic high school seniors and identifies them for postsecondary institutions.
 
NC State brings design workshop to Jordan-Matthews students
[Oct. 10, 2005] Five seniors from the North Carolina State University College of Design conducted a free design workshop at Jordan-Matthews High School on Saturday, September 24, from 9:00 am until 2:30 p.m. Twenty-eight students from Jordan-Matthews participated. The workshop exposed the high school students to college level thinking and allowed them to interact with College of Design seniors.
 
Northwood Marching Chargers receive competition trophiesNorthwood Marching Chargers receive competition trophies
[Oct. 9, 2005] The Northwood High School Marching Chargers recently participated in the fourth annual West Stokes Wildcat Invitational held in King, North Carolina. The Chargers placed third overall and received several trophies. The color guard placed first in both the AA Division and general effect. A second place trophy was also presented to the Chargers for music.

North Chatham needs speakers for Career DayNorth Chatham needs speakers for Career Day
[Oct. 8, 2005] North Chatham School will hold a career day on Thursday, December 1, from 8:00 a.m.- noon. The school is in need of community volunteers from a variety of occupations to speak at the fair. Specifically, speakers will talk with and answer student questions as well as demonstrate their work or provide hands-on experiences that introduce students to the work area.
 
Two Northwood seniors named National Merit semifinalistsTwo Northwood seniors named National Merit semifinalists
[Oct. 6, 2005] Mariana Poole and Michael Brooks, seniors at Northwood High School, have been recognized as National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. This academic program began in 1955. Poole is the daughter of Marjorie Rohbach and Michael Poole. Brooks is the son of Deborah Wechsler and John Wayne Brooks.

[Oct. 2, 2005] Northwood High School is hosting a College Fair on Thursday, October 27, from 7:00-8:15 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Representatives from participating colleges and universities will be available to talk with students and parents. Juniors/Seniors and their parents are especially encouraged to attend.

[Sep. 30, 2005] Seventeen students at Northwood High School have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) Exams. The College Board's Advanced Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams.

[Sep. 29, 2005] Eight students from Chatham County high schools have been named Commended Students in the 2006 National Merit Scholarship Program. Phillip Rives Roscoe of Chatham Central High School and Christino Reyes of Jordan-Matthews are among the honorees. Brian Austin, Nathan Bryant, Douglas Ewald, Kevin Straughn, Andrew Thompson and Jamie Wagner of Northwood High School are honored as well. Each will receive a letter of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation which conducts the program.

[Sep. 28, 2005] Buster the Bus delighted Chatham County elementary students during the month of September as he and his friends from the Chatham County Schools Transportation Department visited schools to talk about bus safety. The talking, miniature robotic bus is equipped with a working stop sign, flashing lights, and a stop arm that allow him to demonstrate bus safety concepts during the question and answer portion of the program.

[Sep. 21, 2005] On September 20, North Carolina State Senator Bob Atwater visited students attending SAGE Academy as part of America's Legislators Back to School Program. The program, sponsored by the National Conference of State Legislatures, is an event where state legislators across the country visit schools and classrooms to talk about the legislature and observe activities in the schools.
 
Chatham Schools celebrate Constitution DayChatham Schools celebrate Constitution Day
[Sep. 17, 2005] During the week of September 19, schools across Chatham County will honor the United States Constitution. Teachers in the Academically and Intellectually Gifted program (AIG) shared information with fellow teachers and have focused on the Constitution in their own classes in preparation. President George W. Bush signed September 17 as Constitution Day into law on December 8, 2004.
 
Chatham Teachers of the Year and retirees honoredChatham Teachers of the Year and retirees honored
[Sep. 16, 2005] Chatham County Schools recognized its 2005-2006 Teachers of the Year and 2005 retirees during a banquet in Siler City on Tuesday, September 12. This year there were fourteen teachers and thirty-three retirees in the group of honorees. Each individual school Teacher of the Year received a plaque and a check from the Chatham County Board of Education.
 
“Kits for Kids” campaign is a success“Kits for Kids” campaign is a success
[Sep. 8, 2005] Thanks to this year’s “Kits for Kids” campaign, nearly 250 children in Chatham County School’s Special Needs Program went to school better prepared to succeed. This program, with coordination from the United Way of Chatham County, gathered backpacks, filled them with basic school supplies and distributed them to children whose families could not afford these materials. Chinese visitors experience Siler City Elementary classroomChinese visitors experience Siler City Elementary classroom
[Sep. 3, 2005] On Tuesday, August 30, guests of the School of Social Work at UNC Chapel Hill visited Siler City Elementary School to observe a lesson in social skills. The Chinese visitors, through the help of a translator, learned about the school from Mary Lee Moore, Director of Federal Programs in Chatham County Schools, and Angie Brady-Andrew, Principal of Siler City Elementary School.
