Three Chatham students are state science fair winners[Mar. 29, 2006] Rebecca Briggs Brown and Julia Rao, sixth grade students at North Chatham, won third place at the State Science Fair in the junior Technology Division on March 25, at Meredith College in Raleigh. For their project they researched how much drivers are distracted while using cell phones.
New elementary school to be named for Virginia Cross[Mar. 29, 2006] The Chatham County Board of Education, during a meeting on Monday, March 28, voted to name the new elementary school being built in Siler City in honor of Virginia Cross, a longtime Siler City educator who still lives in the town. Following the meeting a group of Board members, central office staff, and Siler City Elementary Principal Angie Brady-Andrew visited Mrs. Cross to share the news with her.
Bennett School sponsors Jogging For Jonathan[Mar. 24, 2006] Bennett School participated in activities on March 9&10 to raise money for Relay For Life. The school has a kindergarten child diagnosed with cancer so in conjunction with his kindergarten class, Mrs. Dowdy, the teacher, and the Bennett Junior Beta Club, Bennett School held a "March Madness" hat day.
Chatham Schools strategic planning committee has March meeting[Mar. 24, 2006] The strategic planning committee held its monthly meeting on Thursday, March 23, at Horton Middle School. Gene Huddle, during the introductory segment of the meeting, talked with the group about the need to address different expectations; new norms for performance; the culture of the central office and schools; and school district operation during the process of strategic planning.
Northwood cheerleading squad has successful season[Mar. 24, 2006] The Northwood High School competition cheerleading squad concluded another strong competitive season. The squad competed three times during the months of January and February. The highlight of the season was when the Chargers repeated as the 2006 Co-Ed State Champions. The team members each received state champion t-shirts and the team brought another State Championship Trophy to Northwood.
Jordan-Matthews senior awarded Pogue Scholarship[Mar. 23, 2006] Alyssa Goodwin has been selected to receive a Joseph E. and Grace Needham Pogue Scholarship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of clear achievements in academics, leadership, and citizenship in high school and potential for continued success at the University.
Six Chatham students accepted to Governor's School[Mar. 20, 2006] Six students will be representing Chatham County Schools at the 2006 Governor's School. The experience is a six-week, residential program for intellectually gifted high school students.
Northwood band rates superior at festival[Mar. 20, 2006] The thirty-nine members of the Northwood High School Wind Ensemble participated in the NC Central District Bandmasters Association High School Band Festival on March 13. The event was held at the Asheboro High School Performing Arts. The Northwood ensemble received a superior rating from all four judges at the festival. Superior is the highest rating in music festivals.
Town meeting on school safety planned[Mar. 17, 2006] The Chatham Coalition for Alcohol and Drug Free Youth, in cooperation with Chatham County Schools and the Chatham County Sheriff's Department, is hosting a town hall meeting on school safety. The event will be held on Tuesday, March 28, at 7:00 p.m. at the Silk Hope School.

Pi Day is on the way[Mar. 12, 2006] On Tuesday, March 14, students across the nation and in Chatham County Schools will celebrate Pi Day. This event, which first began at the San Francisco Exploratorium, is celebrated on 3.14, which is the three-digit approximation of the value of pi. (Pi is the number of times a circle's diameter will fit around its circumference.)
Silk Hope school hosts career day[Mar. 12, 2006] Middle school students at Silk Hope school learned about a wide range of careers and vocations on Friday, March 10, during a career day event. There were nine rotations of speakers that the students visited with in thirty-minute segments. Participating professionals were from the school community and area businesses.
