[Apr. 15, 2006] On Thursday, April 13, the J.S. Waters School chapter of Junior Beta Club inducted fifteen new members. The fifteen previously inducted members conducted the ceremony that was held in the school multipurpose room. Attended by fellow students, school staff, and family members, the ceremony began with a welcome and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Principal Gary Yoder.

[Apr. 14, 2006] On Wednesday, April 12, the Chatham County Soil and Water Conservation District honored Chatham County elementary and middle school students who participated in its annual essay and poster contests. The ceremony was held in the auditorium of the agriculture building in Pittsboro and was followed by a luncheon for the students, their parents, and school personnel in attendance.

[Apr. 13, 2006] Chatham County Schools, in partnership with McIntyre's Fine Books, hosted a reception honoring library media personnel and Young Authors on Tuesday, April 11, at 6:00 p.m., at The Barn at Fearrington Village during the 2006 Library Media Celebration in conjunction with National Library Week. The evening included a reception, awards presentation and a book reading and signing by author Pamela Pease. Pease, a Chapel Hill author, was available to answer questions after her book reading.
 
Northwood senior wins $10,000 scholarshipNorthwood senior wins $10,000 scholarship
[Apr. 12, 2006] Kristen Norwood, a senior at Northwood High School, is a recipient of an award from the State Employees' Credit Union (SECU) scholarship program. Norwood, who will attend East Carolina University in the fall of 2006 as a dance education major, will receive $10,000 payable in $1,250 semester increments.

[Apr. 9, 2006] Northwood High School Future Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) students competed at the State Leadership Conference in Greensboro on Tuesday, April 4. The group was successful in bringing home the following honors.

[Apr. 8, 2006] The College Fund of North Carolina (CFNC) sponsored a statewide Call CFNC Week for its CFNC had a statewide Call CFNC Week for its GEAR UP I cohorts. Over fifteen schools participated in the contest. Chatham County won both the middle and high school contests. Silk Hope won the middle school contest and Jordan-Matthews won the high school contest. Both schools will have pizza parties for the participants.

[Apr. 7, 2006] Seven members of the Chatham Central chapter of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) attended the annual state conference April 3-5 in Greensboro. Students attended various workshops on building leadership for communities and families first.

[Apr. 6, 2006] The Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) has completed another successful season. Several seventh grade students from Chatham County Schools participated. These students completed either the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Assessment college entrance examination while in middle school.
 
Jordan-Matthews students accepted to Duke pharmacology program
[Apr. 3, 2006] Three students at Jordan-Matthews High School, Brittany Rachel, Frank Rivera, and Sean Wilkerson, have been accepted to the Launch into Education About Pharmacology (LEAP) program. LEAP is a part of the Raising Interest in Science Education (RISE) program that is sponsored by Duke University.

[Apr. 2, 2006] Chatham County Schools has been recognized as a “2005-2006 Super System for Quality Schools” by the Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (CASI) of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The district is among 541 school districts in the eleven state SACS CASI region that qualified for this recognition. Among these were fifty-two North Carolina school districts. Chatham County Schools earned the distinction for having all its elementary, middle, and secondary schools accredited.

[Apr. 2, 2006] The Northwood High School quiz bowl team won the 2006 district championship game held at Reynolda Public Library in Winston-Salem, on Saturday, March 25.

[Apr. 1, 2006] On Tuesday, March 21, students at Jordan-Matthews High School had the privilege of spending time with a visiting author. Carlos Eire, a National Book Award winning author, talked with the students about his book, Waiting for Snow in Havana: Confessions of a Cuban Boy.

[Mar. 29, 2006] Rebecca Briggs Brown and Julia Rao, sixth grade students at North Chatham, won third place at the State Science Fair in the junior Technology Division on March 25, at Meredith College in Raleigh. For their project they researched how much drivers are distracted while using cell phones.
 
Annual Northwood musical is this weekendAnnual Northwood musical is this weekend
[Mar. 29, 2006] Northwood High School will present its annual spring musical March30-April 1. The performances begin at 7 p.m. each evening and will be held in the Benjamin Lee Auditorium on the school campus. Admission is $6 the public. Seniors and children 4 and under, $4.

New elementary school to be named for Virginia CrossNew elementary school to be named for Virginia Cross
[Mar. 29, 2006] The Chatham County Board of Education, during a meeting on Monday, March 28, voted to name the new elementary school being built in Siler City in honor of Virginia Cross, a longtime Siler City educator who still lives in the town. Following the meeting a group of Board members, central office staff, and Siler City Elementary Principal Angie Brady-Andrew visited Mrs. Cross to share the news with her.
