Chatham County Schools welcomes new teachers[Aug. 19, 2006] The week of August 14 has been a busy time for new teachers in Chatham County Schools. Traditional teacher workdays began on August 17, but the Human Resources Department sponsored a new teacher induction program for earlier in the week to assist the teachers in being prepared for the beginning of the school year. Over fifty teachers who are new to the profession and lateral entry teachers who are finalizing their teacher licensure participated in a seminar on Monday and Tuesday, August 14 and 15, at Horton Middle School in Pittsboro.
Chatham releases Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) results[Aug. 14, 2006] The federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 evaluates academic progress of students across the nation through Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). Only eight of fourteen schools in Chatham County Schools made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the 2005-2006 school year.
Chatham Board of Education names three new school principals[Jun. 30, 2006] On Monday evening, June 19, the Chatham County Board of Education filled administrative vacancies at three schools. The new principal of Northwood High School will be Carrie Little. Mattie Smith will replace Little as principal of North Chatham School. Valgean Mitchell will be the new principal of Perry Harrison School.
Highlight on pre-K and after school programs[Jun. 30, 2006] Chatham County Schools works to meet the needs of students and their families in a variety of ways including offering pre-kindergarten and after school programs at many of its school sites. Several of the programs have worked throughout the 2005-2006 school year to meet changing state operation regulations.
Educational office professionals sponsor blood drive[Jun. 29, 2006] The Chatham County Association of Educational Office Professionals (CCAEOP) held a blood drive at Horton Middle School on Thursday, June 14. Twenty people presented to donate. Of these twenty, six were first time donors. There were seventeen units of blood collected through the American Red Cross.
Student transfer request deadline is June 30[Jun. 29, 2006] Parents/Guardians of students requesting a transfer assignment are required to annually complete and submit a transfer release form for each child in order for the transfer assignment to be considered. This annual assignment request is reviewed by the Board of Education.
Goodbye Cole Park?[Jun. 26, 2006] Plans are under way for the construction of a new building. This is a momentous time for the school, which first held classes just eight years ago. After all of the memories, the good and the bad, Woods will move to a freestanding building within the Briar’s Chapel development.

A closer look at school crime[Jun. 26, 2006] We recently examined criminal incident reports from four local schools: Chapel Hill High, East Chapel Hill High, PACE Academy and Woods Charter School. We found that incidents, in general, rose significantly from 2001 through 2004 and steadily dropped after that point. However, our main aim in this procedure was to examine the difficulty in obtaining certain public documents.

Chatham Central has awards day[Jun. 1, 2006] Chatham Central High School held its annual awards ceremony on Friday, May 26. Dr. Ann Hart, Superintendent, presented Academic Excellence awards. Faculty also presented various awards to deserving students.
Horton Middle School gets new principal[May 31, 2006] Pat Lane, principal of Horton Middle School in Pittsboro, will take a job with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Mervin A. Jenkins will be the new principal effective July 1. Jenkins currently serves as an assistant principal in Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools at Chapel Hill High School.
Jordan-Matthews hosts technology showcase[Apr. 27, 2006] Jordan-Matthews High School sponsored a Technology Showcase evening on Tuesday, April 25, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Set up at stations in classrooms and the media center, students and teachers used iBook laptop computers in displaying projects and allowed attendees to participate in simulated classroom settings. With a wide range of subject areas represented, visitors were able to experience a twenty-first century learning environment.
County students participate in Envirothon[Apr. 25, 2006] A team from Perry Harrison School participated in an Environthon on March 22 at Elon University. Team members were Nathan Kosiba, Jack Koch, Matt Kleber, Thomas Buckner, Rachel Manring.
Moncure has team in Battle of the Books[Apr. 18, 2006] Moncure School of Chatham County competed with eleven other counties in the Region 5 Battle of the Books competition. The competition was held at the Caswell County Civic Center in Yanceyville, NC. Eleven games were played. Moncure won three out of eleven games.
