Update on upcoming Board of Education meetings
[Jan. 11, 2010] The Chatham County Board of Education has been invited to participate with County Commissioners and local mayors in a joint elected boards meeting scheduled for 6:00-8:00 p.m. on January 21. The location for this meeting will be at Bestfood Cafeteria in Siler City.

[Dec. 21, 2009] Due to the recent passing of Gerald Totten, the Chatham County Board of Education currently has a vacant seat. Totten’s term was due to expire in late 2010 so the Board will name a person who resides in the current Board of Education district 4 to fill his unexpired term.

[Dec. 4, 2009] The students, employees, and families of Chatham County Schools mourn the loss of Gerald Totten, a member of the Chatham County Board of Education who passed away the morning of Wednesday, December 2, after a brief battle with cancer.

[Oct. 29, 2009] Multiple students from high schools in Chatham County Schools have earned commendations from the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement of Advanced Placement (AP) Exams. The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP) provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams.

[Oct. 29, 2009] Twelve schools across the Carolinas have been selected as finalists in the Progress Energy SunSense schools program. Five of the finalists will receive solar photovoltaic installations in the coming months, as part of a partnership between Progress Energy Carolinas and the Carolina Hurricanes Kids ’N Community Foundation.

[Oct. 29, 2009] Chatham Central High School held a college day the morning of Thursday, October 15, for juniors, seniors, and their parents. Fifty-eight institutions of higher education set up displays in the cafeteria where representatives spoke with the students and their parents. The recruiters fielded questions about degree programs offered by their institutions, admission requirements, and financial aid.

Siler City Elementary garden wins award and is Monarch butterfly habitat
[Sep. 15, 2009] The Siler City Elementary Garden Project has been awarded a Chocolate for Good kit from Dagoba Organic Chocolate. Dagoba had an overwhelming response to its call for submissions and found the Siler City Elementary project to be an especially innovative approach to creating a greener and more sustainable future.

[Sep. 14, 2009] Student enrollment in Chatham County schools on day 10 was 7,672. This is 59 fewer students than last year day 10. State projected enrollment was 7,691. Chatham County schools are 19 students lower. There is no loss of teacher allotments from the state unless the school system is at least 100 under projection.

[Aug. 28, 2009] On Wednesday evening, August 26, issuing individual laptop computers to high school students became a reality in Chatham County Schools. Chatham Central High School kicked off the newest phase of the district’s 1 to 1 Laptop Learning Program followed by Jordan-Matthews and SAGE Academy on Thursday night, and Northwood the week of August 31st.
