Moncure PTA holds “Guy's Night Out”[Jan. 30, 2007] The Moncure School PTA held its first "Guy's Night Out" event on Friday, January 26, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the school gymnasium. The event was an evening for all Moncure male students and their fathers, grandfathers, and/or male guardians to come and enjoy an evening of basketball, relay races, pizza and prizes. Over sixty males took part in the event.
Moncure student wins art award[Jan. 28, 2007] Layne Childress, a second grader at Moncure School, is a state winner in the Arts Contest sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) Minority Affairs Commission. This is a scholarship fundraiser in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is held each year on the Friday prior to King's birthday.
Hill renews National Board Certification[Jan. 28, 2007] Daphne Hill, a third grade teacher at Pittsboro Elementary School, has completed the renewal process for National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) status. Hill was the first National Board Certified Teacher in Chatham County Schools, earning her initial certification in 1996. She was one of the first 100 educators in the state of North Carolina and one of the first 600 educators in the nation to earn the certification.
January 22nd Board of Education meeting summary[Jan. 25, 2007] The Chatham County Board of Education met on Monday, January 22, at J.S. Waters School. Board members reviewed and approved the meeting agenda as presented for the January 22nd meeting. They also reviewed and approved the amended minutes from the January 8th regular meeting and amended minutes from the January 12th central office briefing.
Perry Harrison School announces science fair winners[Jan. 23, 2007] The Perry Harrison School Science Fair was held on Tuesday, January 16, with students entering approximately ninety projects. The school hosted an open house on Wednesday, January 17, until 7:00 p.m. to allow parents and students the opportunity to view the projects..
Jordan-Matthews group to participate in Legislative School Technology Day[Jan. 21, 2007] As of January 16th, sixty-seven schools were scheduled to exhibit at the Legislative School Technology Day. One school from every school district in the state has been invited to send students and a teacher to participate. Dr. Victoria Raymond and two of her students from Jordan-Matthews High School will represent Chatham County Schools at the event.
National Board Certified Teachers announced[Jan. 11, 2007] The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards has announced its newest group of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT). Twelve teachers in Chatham County Schools were among the nearly 7,800 teachers nationwide to achieve National Board Certification in 2006, a seven percent increase over the number of teachers who earned certification in 2005. Ten Chatham County teachers earned National Board Certification in 2005.
Redistricting committee has third meeting[Jan. 5, 2007] The redistricting committee for the Siler City and Silk Hope areas met on Thursday night, January 4, at 6:00 p.m. in the multipurpose room of Siler City Elementary School. The committee is comprised of principals and parent representatives from the affected schools, Board of Education members, central office staff, and Superintendent Ann Hart.
Northwood announces art show and dinner[Jan. 4, 2007] The Art Department of Northwood High School will host a student art show and an Italian dinner on Thursday, January 11. The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. with the dinner being held in the school cafeteria from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The art show will be held in the main lobby from 6:00-9:00 p.m.
Horton helps Habitat for Humanity[Dec. 27, 2006] The Horton Middle School student body adopted a community project that culminated with the creation of five quilts for Habitat for Humanity. During an assembly on Wednesday morning, December 20, students and staff celebrated the beginning of the winter break with an assembly to present the quilts to Habitat for Humanity.
Central Carolina Community College hires Biofuels curriculum developer[Dec. 20, 2006] Andrew McMahan is riding the surge of interest in the growing biofuels energy industry and having a hand in shaping the workforce that will serve it. McMahan has been hired by Central Carolina Community College to develop a curriculum program that will train workers for this rapidly expanding energy-production field. His work is being funded by a $58,190 grant from the North Carolina Community College System’s BioNetwork Center.
Three Chatham seniors are Morehead semifinalists[Dec. 15, 2006] Three Chatham County seniors have been selected by the Morehead Foundation as Morehead Scholarship semifinalists. Zack Ellington is a student at Jordan-Matthews High School. Lily Smith and Siler Bryan are students at Northwood High School.
