North Chatham has “Koins for Kayla” Fundraiser[Feb. 24, 2007] North Chatham School recently held a fundraiser for the family of one of its kindergarten students who has leukemia and is undergoing treatment. With the help of the National Junior Honor Society, the school raised $6, 822.66 for the student and her family.
Chatham Schools set kindergarten registration dates[Feb. 24, 2007] Chatham County Schools has designated a single week of kindergarten registration at all schools in the district for 2007. Parents/Guardians of children who will be kindergartners in the fall of 2007 will register at their local school March 19-23 during the hours of 8:30 am. and 4:00 p.m.
Bus drivers and cell phones get media attention[Feb. 24, 2007] There has been recent concern in North Carolina and nationally about bus drivers using cell phones while operating buses. Chatham County Schools, like all other public school systems across the state, follows the Handbook for School Bus Drivers. The Transportation Department of Chatham County Schools provides training for potential bus drivers several times during each school year. This handbook is the basis of those courses.
Chatham honors winners in Science Fair awards ceremony[Feb. 24, 2007] Chatham County Schools sponsored its annual Science Fair on Wednesday, February 7, and Thursday, February 8. The events culminated in an awards ceremony held in the Jordan-Matthews High School auditorium.
Silk Hope School experiences quilting connections[Feb. 23, 2007] Math, literature, history, folk art, and technology came together in the Silk Hope media center on Friday, February 2, as the third, fourth, and fifth grade teaching teams participated in an afternoon of Quilting Connections. The program included booktalks, quilt legends, history, and mathematics connections to quilting and was presented by Chatham County Schools Math Resource Teacher Beth Sweeney-Newman and Media Coordinator Kim Johnson.
Chatham Teacher Advisory Committee meeting notes[Feb. 15, 2007] The Teacher Advisory Committee (TAC) meeting convened at North Chatham Elementary School on January 17, 2007, in the media center. Dr. Ann Hart called the meeting to order at 3:35 p.m.
Board of Education meets with Commissioners to discuss school site[Feb. 14, 2007] The Chatham County Board of Education met on Monday, February 12, at Pittsboro Elementary School. At 6:30 p.m. the Board held a joint meeting with the Chatham County Board of Commissioners. At 7:30 p.m. the Board of Education held a regularly scheduled work session.
Minority achievement awards planned[Feb. 8, 2007] The academic success of every student not only contributes to the overall success of the educational system, but to the community as well. Students who succeed in school become valued contributing members of our society.
Chatham County schools' dropout rate decreases for third year[Feb. 8, 2007] The dropout rate in Chatham County Schools dropped for the third consecutive year. The county dropout rate dropped from 4.50 in 2004-05 to 3.72 percent in 2005-06. Chatham County is one of forty-six school districts across the state to have a decrease in its dropout rate. There are 115 school districts in North Carolina.
High school students job shadow[Feb. 7, 2007] Eleventh graders from across Chatham County can learn about careers of interest during the month of February as part of the annual job shadowing opportunity organized by the Career/Technical Education program. The majority of students spent a portion or all of a day with professionals on Friday, February 2, or Monday, February 5. A total of 113 high school juniors participated in job shadowing at area businesses, offices, and schools.
Redistricting committee reviews community comments[Feb. 7, 2007] On Tuesday evening, February 6, the redistricting committee for the Siler City/Silk Hope area met at Siler City Elementary School. The primary meeting agenda items were to review comments from two recent information sessions and community email input and, secondly, to consider redistricting scenarios based on input.
