Silk Hope students celebrate D.A.R.E. graduation[Mar. 17, 2007] Students, parents, and special guests gathered in the Silk Hope multipurpose room to celebrate the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) graduation of fifty-five fifth graders on Thursday, March 15. Among the attendees were Richard Webster, Chatham County Sheriff, and six other officers showing their support for the program.
Jump Rope for Heart event ends at North Chatham[Mar. 12, 2007] From November 13 to February 14, elementary students at North Chatham School participated in the Jump Rope for Heart event. The long-term project included curriculum-related health discussions and physical activity. Jump Rope for Heart is a national program that promotes the value of physical activity and helps elementary students learn how they can contribute to the welfare of their community.
Schools hold annual Read Across America celebrations[Mar. 12, 2007] The Bonlee eighth grade WBES morning news crew assumed new identities for their morning show on March 2nd. Announcers for this special show were 'Thing 1' and 'Thing 2' (Ashley Lamonds and Kristen Saunders). Special guest was The Cat in the Hat, aka Macon Moore). The group's morning show began the school wide Read Across America Day celebration that is held on Dr. Seuss's birthday.
North Carolina releases cohort graduation rate[Mar. 8, 2007] The North Carolina Cohort Graduation Rate has been released by the State Board of Education. The Cohort Graduation Rate is a new measure, and the 2006 Cohort Graduation Rate is the first time this measure has been collected and reported. The Cohort rate illustrates the percentage of ninth graders that have graduated from high school four years later.
Moncure School goes solar[Mar. 8, 2007] The Abundance Foundation installed two solar panels in the Moncure School courtyard after learning that students in the upper hallway needed access to hot water in their bathrooms. Some older buildings in the school district do not have hot water in certain areas.
Project Child Find underway[Mar. 8, 2007] An effort called Project Child Find is underway in the Chatham County Schools to identify children and youth ages 3-21 who have disabilities and require special education and other related services.
Area students in Mathcounts competition[Mar. 8, 2007] On Saturday, February 24, students from Moncure School and North Chatham School were among students from thirty-four schools to compete in a Mathcounts Central Carolina Chapter competition at Athens Drive High School in Raleigh. Mathcounts is a national math enrichment, coaching and competition program for middle school students.
Moncure PTA holds “Girl's Night Out”[Mar. 8, 2007] The Moncure School PTA held its first "Girl's Night Out" event on Friday, February 9 in the Moncure cafeteria. The event was an evening for all Moncure female students to come and enjoy an evening of fun food, charades and prizes with their mothers, grandmothers, and/or female guardians.
Ms. Currin’s class participates in "Block Kids" at Perry Harrison School[Mar. 8, 2007] On Friday, February 16, Jeanett Currin's fifth grade class at Perry Harrison School participated in a unique competition involving Legos and the Durham Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). The competition, called “Block Kids,” is a national building competition sponsored by NAWIC and is open to elementary students in grades one through six.
Walmart donates funds to Chatham schools[Mar. 4, 2007] On Friday, March 2, Tony Tysinger, the Assistant Manager of the Siler City Walmart, brought checks to several schools in Chatham County as part of Walmart's Community Grants program.
Board of Education makes redistricting decision[Mar. 2, 2007] Chatham County Schools has been in the process of redistricting the elementary attendance zones for the Siler City and Silk Hope areas in preparation for the opening of Virginia Cross Elementary School this fall.
Minority Achievement Awards ceremonies held[Feb. 26, 2007] On Saturday, February 24, the Chatham County Raising Achievement/Closing Gaps Task Force hosted Minority Achievement Awards Celebrations for minority students who have achieved a passing score on the states end-of-grade tests.
Starbase team visits Bonlee School[Feb. 25, 2007] A Black Hawk helicopter carrying a crack commando team of teachers landed Tuesday morning, January 23, at Bonlee School. Their mission: to make science and math fun. The five-member squad of retired teachers arrived via the helicopter to kick off a week of "Starbase" for Bonlee fourth and fifth graders.
Horton students participate in National Young Leaders State Conference[Feb. 25, 2007] Austin Hundley and Austin Mathews, eighth graders at Horton Middle School, participated in the National Young Leaders State Conference (NYLSC), in Charlotte February 16-18. During the first Leadership Development Meeting, students participated in group ice breakers, then proceeded to a “Fuel for an Emerging Leader” exercise.
