April 23rd Board of Education meeting summary[Apr. 25, 2007] The Chatham County Board of Education met on Monday, April 23, in the central office board room. Chairman Norman Clark called the meeting to order, and the Board adopted the meeting agenda. Board members approved the amended minutes for the March 26 meeting.
Northwood FCCLA works to improve teen health[Apr. 11, 2007] Each year Northwood FCCLA members choose a project for outreach into the community. This year students found information that led them to look at the health issues facing young people. FCCLA members are helping students at Northwood High School and the schools in the community to learn about physical fitness.
Silk Hope sponsors pajama drive[Apr. 11, 2007] The Student Council of Silk Hope School sponsored a school wide pajama drive from February 20-March 9. A total of 208 pairs of pajamas were donated. The pajamas will be given to triangle area group homes, foster homes and needy families.
Jordan-Matthews SkillsUSA tours BMW plant[Apr. 11, 2007] On February 26, eleven SkillsUSA members of the Jordan-Matthews chapter traveled to the BMW plant, in Spartanburg, SC. First on the tour was a visited to the Zentrum, the only BMW museum in North America, which sits next to the only BMW manufacturing facility in the United States. In the Zentrum, the group saw firsthand the ingenuity and history of the BMW brand.
Perry Harrison School holds DARE graduation[Apr. 11, 2007] Perry Harrison School held a DARE graduation program on Monday, March 12. Deputy Sandra Ross presented certificates to all fifth graders for their participation in the program. Sheriff Richard Webster, Captain Charles Gardner, Sergeant Chris Cooper, Corporal Tom D'Angelo and Deputy Kyle Smith were present to wish the students well.
J.S. Waters holds Junior Beta Club induction[Apr. 10, 2007] J.S. Waters held its annual Junior Beta Club induction ceremony on Friday, March 9. Seventeen new members were inducted. To be eligible for Junior Beta Club, students in grades six through eight must have an overall average of ninety-three or above in the four core subjects of math, language arts, Science, and social studies.
High school chapters compete in state DECA events[Apr. 10, 2007] Students from Chatham Central, Jordan-Matthews, and Northwood high schools attended the North Carolina DECA State Competitive Events Conference held March 1-3 in Greensboro. Many of the students competed in various competitive events.
Pittsboro Elementary combines ACC and Relay for Life[Apr. 10, 2007] The students at Pittsboro Elementary avidly participated in voting for their favorite ACC "Big Four" school while raising money for the Chatham County Relay for Life. Each vote represented a penny to be donated to Relay for Life in the name of their favorite team. The school raised over $835.
Civil war photography expert visits Bennett[Apr. 10, 2007] Bob Zeller, a leading expert on Civil War photography, was a guest speaker at Bennett School on Wednesday morning, March 7. During the slide presentation for seventh and eighth graders, Zeller narrated a chronological history of the war using seventy-nine 3-D stereograph images. The audience wore 3-D glasses to get the full effect of the images.
Eric Montross visits J.S. Waters School[Mar. 28, 2007] An integration of math, character education and March Madness resulted in a visit from former UNC basketball player Eric Montross for all fifth through eighth graders at J.S. Waters School on March 20. Montross shared his experiences and encouraged the students to make good choices and stay away from drugs. He even passed his 1993 NCAA championship ring around so all students could try it on and experience how it felt to be number one.
Beauty & the Beast tours Chatham schools[Mar. 27, 2007] Principal cast, musicians, as well as senior dancers, actors, and crew took a preview of the Northwood Spring Musical to Pittsboro Elementary, Horton Middle School, and North Chatham School on Friday, March 23. Approximately forty students traveled with Northwood Arts Department faculty members Lori Carlin, Amy Loch, and Eugene Cottrell.
