Teacher holds class at pizzeria[Jan. 29, 2008] A new school in Pittsboro is offering an alternative to the public school system. It’s called the Pizza Kitchen School and it just opened this past Summer by owner Donna Bianco. Bianco used to be a teacher with the Chatham County School District but said she was not happy about the way kids were learning in the public school system. Her business first opened in May as a pizzeria. Then in August she opened the school.

CCCC Chatham literacy program reaches families[Jan. 21, 2008] Hernan Sanchez, 10, bent over his math homework. During the day, he had studied in his fourth grade class at Pittsboro Elementary School. Now it was evening and he was back again, hitting the books. “This is more fun than watching TV,” he said with a smile. “We learn more.”
Board names Dr. David Bryant interim Chatham school superintendent[Dec. 21, 2007] During a special called meeting on Thursday, December 20, the Chatham County Board of Education announced Dr. David Bryant will serve as interim superintendent of Chatham County Schools. His first day will be Wednesday, January 2. Bryant served as Director of Secondary Education in Chatham County Schools from 2001 through the spring of 2005.
Chatham has highest VoCATS scores in region[Dec. 16, 2007] The 2006-07 VoCATS scores of students in Chatham County Schools were the highest of all the twenty-two school districts in the East Central Region. Chatham had a success rate of 76 percent. The East Central Region average was 66.3 percent while the state average was 67.6 percent. The Chatham scores rank eighteenth in the state.
Moncure School holds food drive[Dec. 16, 2007] Moncure School collected approximately 1000 food items. These food items were donated to the CORA (Chatham OutReach Alliance) food pantry and to the Chatham County Schools FUEL Up (Food Until Everything Looks Up) program on Friday, December 7.
Chatham has six newly National Board certified teachers[Dec. 3, 2007] Six teachers in Chatham County Schools are among the most recent group of educators to earn National Board Certified Teachers. The program is sponsored by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).
Run for the Mariners 5K is a big success[Dec. 3, 2007] The second Perry Harrison School PTSA Run for the Mariners 5K and 1 mile fun run/walk on Saturday, November 17 was a great success. Thirty-one runners turned out to run the 5K and many others did the one mile.

November 26th Board of Education meeting summary[Dec. 3, 2007] The Chatham County Board of Education held a meeting on Monday, November 26, at 7:30 p.m. at Northwood High School. Eddie Davis, President of the NC Association of Educators, presented the Chatham County Association of Educators (CCAE) with a North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) Blue Ribbon Locals Excellence Award.
School superintendent Ann Hart resigns[Nov. 14, 2007] Dr. Ann Hart, Superintendent of Chatham County Schools, announced her retirement during the Chatham County Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, November 13. The retirement will be effective December 31.
Virginia Cross Elementary officially opens[Oct. 23, 2007] On Monday morning, October 22, Virginia Cross Elementary School in Siler City officially opened for over 550 students and staff. Administrators, office staff, and teachers greeted students and families as they came on campus. Upon entering the building Mrs. Virginia Cross, a longtime Chatham County teacher for whom the school is named, personally welcomed students to their new school.
Move to Virginia Cross Elementary begins[Oct. 18, 2007] With the majority of campus preparation completed, furniture and other equipment has begun being moved into Virginia Cross Elementary School. Barring any unforeseen complications, the school system hopes to have its first day in the new school with students on Monday, October 22.
CCCC breaks ground for new buildings on Pittsboro campus[Oct. 17, 2007] Armed with gold-painted shovels, leaders of Chatham County and Central Carolina Community College, joined by community members and state officials, broke ground Wednesday for two eagerly awaited buildings on the college’s Chatham Campus.
Eight named to NCHSAA HAll of Fame[Sep. 29, 2007] Eight more outstanding names in the annals of state prep athletics have been selected for induction into the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame. Stuart Allen of Charlotte, Daryl Barnes currently of Lexington, Bob Brooks of Elizabeth City, Bill Carver of Fayetteville, Elton Hawley currently residing in Clover, SC, Fred Lanford of Hudson, Bill Rucker of Black Mountain and Ronald Scott of Bear Creek have been chosen as the 21st group of inductees to join the prestigious hall. That brings to 110 the number enshrined.
BOE announces community focus groups[Sep. 24, 2007] Have ideas about ways to help our school system? Have talents or resources you would like to share with students?
