Pittsboro, NC - Eighth grade students at Horton Middle Schoolin in the science classes of Jamie Callicutt participated in a stream investigation of nearby Robeson Creek on May 11 and 12. The three-day series of classroom and field lessons were led by the Haw River Assembly. This was a culminating activity for the hydrosphere unit in which students applied their knowledge gained about determining water quality.

Students participated in hands-on and real-world testing of water, such as determining pH, nitrate levels, and water temperature. They also went into the stream and collected macroinvertibrates to determine the health of the stream.

"The students absolutely loved the stream investigation. They learned so much and didn't even realize they were learning. I definitely saw them applying their knowledge and using critical thinking skills, which is so crucial in the real world," said Jamie Callicutt.
