Greensboro, NC - Students from all three high schools in Chatham County Schools attended the State DECA Career Development Conference held in Greensboro February 28-March 1.
Chatham Central High School
The Chatham Central DECA chapter had sixteen attendees at the conference. Their chapter was recognized as a Superstar Chapter for having at least a ten percent increase in membership. Chatham Central also received the gold level membership award for increased membership over last year.
Sophomore Julia Haman was recognized as a top role play score in Apparel and Accessories Management. Cory Deaton finished seventh in the state in Food Marketing Management. Wilkie finished seventh in the state in Quick Serve Restaurant Management.
Jordan-Matthews High School
The Jordan-Matthews DECA chapter had twenty-eight students who competed in career development events. Of those, twenty-five were proficiency winners and fifteen finished as overall winners on the final day.
Six students from Jordan-Matthews received a medal for either their role-play or their proficiency scores in a test. Those students were Meredith Pleasants, Sara Shaw, Stefanie King, Derek Brown, JJ Daniel, and Michael Coletta.
Jordan-Matthews had three first place event winners: Sarah Johnson and Meredith Pleasants in the Advertising Campaign; Claire Austin and Jakelin Bonillia in the Creative Marketing Project; and Diana Diamant in the Retail Marketing event.
Jordan-Matthews had three second place event winners: Teryn Skumpija in the Learn and Earn Project; Adrian Degraffenreidt in the Entrepreneurship event; & Michael Coletta and JJ Daniel in Sports and Entertainment Marketing Management.
Brittany Evans and Chelsey Evans finished third in the Public Relations Project.
Jordan-Matthews had five other overall finalists: Chelsey Evans and Stefanie King in Hospitality and Recreation Marketing; Ali Dameron in Business and Financial Services Marketing; and Christian Herrera and Shelia Mondragon in Travel and Tourism Marketing.
“JM DECA has much to be proud of with fifty-three percent of our members being recognized as overall finalists. This was a very strong showing for our school,” commented Luke Nicks, marketing teacher and DECA advisor.
Northwood High School
Twenty-three students from the Northwood DECA chapter attended the conference. The following Northwood students received awards for their performance:
Proficiency winners were: Taylor Barker, Jae Bland, Courtney Bouldin, Thomas Bryant, Shakira Carrington, Matt Delafield, Alexa Doan, Bradley Emerson, Alan Foushee, Charlie Goldberg, Haley Gordon-Winters, Ashton Haithcox, Aaron Lamb, Victor Lewis, Nicole Miller, Nik Newton, Barrett Powell, David Rhine, Brittany Sturdivant, Claire Svendsen, George Thompson, Cameron Williams
The following students were recognized for top scores in their role-play events: Bradley Emerson Nik Newton Cameron Williams
The following students were recognized for top scores in their written exam: Thomas Bryant, Matt Delafield, Alan Foushee, Victor Lewis
Nik Newton was recognized as for having a top ten score on the Economic Foundations Exam.
Thomas Bryant was awarded the T. Carl Brown Scholarship worth $1000. Alan Foushee was awarded the Sonya Dismuke Memorial Scholarship worth $1000.

Barrett Powell and Charlie Goldberg, ninth place, Internet Marketing Team Decision Making Event
Aaron Lamb, sixth place, Market Management Series Event
Nik Newton, first Place overall, Automotive Services Marketing
Alan Foushee, first place overall, Technical Sales Representative Event
“Congratulations to all of the “Cool DECA Kids” that competed in the NC-DECA State Competitive Events Conference last weekend. They all represented Northwood will great class and enthusiasm,” said Kim Mathias, marketing teacher and DECA advisor.
These students will now advance to Atlanta Georgia for the International DECA Competitive Events Conference in April.
