Pittsboro, NC - Dr. Ann Hart, Superintendent of Chatham County Schools, announced her retirement during the Chatham County Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, November 13. The retirement will be effective December 31.

Hart will take a position as Director of the Eastern Division for the AVID program. She will be based out of Atlanta.
AVID, an acronym for Advancement via Individual Determination, targets middle-performing students and those who will be first generation college students who have the desire, academic potential, and determination to succeed in a rigorous high school curriculum; participate in extra-curricular activities; and apply to, enroll in, and graduate from a four-year college. High schools in Chatham County Schools are in their second year of the AVID program. This year AVID groups are comprised of sophomores and juniors.

“I am honored to have been a part of the successes, accomplishments and challenges in Chatham County Schools. My work here during the last two and a half years has affirmed my belief that the traditions of achievement, excellence, and determination will continue as the foundation of this school district. I believe it is poised for excellence. I will cherish the relationships I have formed with colleagues, new friends and community members and truly appreciate the support and guidance the Northwood High School staff gave my son when we moved here,” said Hart.

Hart came to Chatham County Schools in July of 2005. She has thirty years of experience as an educator in North Carolina and three and a half years of experience as an educator in South Carolina.

“I am very saddened to see Dr. Hart leave. I think she has been good for the system. We are moving in the right direction, and I would have liked for Dr. Hart to be able to see the results of her efforts. On behalf of the Board of Education, I wish her the best in all of her future endeavors,” said Norman Clark, Chairman of the Chatham County Board of Education.

The Board will elicit assistance from the North Carolina School Boards Association in finding an interim superintendent to come to Chatham County Schools until it can find a new superintendent.
