Pittsboro, NC - Charlotte Harrison, an eighth grader at Perry Harrison School, was awarded three gold keys at the 2008 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards in a ceremony on January 20 at Barton College. Her artwork was judged against 1,900 other middle school and high school applicants in the eastern/central North Carolina region. There were 200 gold keys awarded in this region this year. The gold key winners received certificates and keys and were able to view the exhibition of winning artwork.

"This is such an honor for Charlotte. The Scholastics Art competition is a great way to recognize student achievement and to help emphasize the importance of art in schools. Not only am I very proud of her, I am proud that our school has been able to produce a gold key winner given that this is primarily a high school competition,” said Leah Vigus, Harrison art teacher.

Approximately 30,000 young artists and writers from across the United States receive recognition on the regional level. The most outstanding works of art and writing from each of the Regional Affiliate programs, Gold Keys, are forwarded to New York City to be assessed on a national level. Panels of professional jurors reviewed more than 6,165 works of art and 1,268 manuscripts to select the 1,160 national award recipients in 2007.

Harrison’s artwork will now go to New York City to compete for the National Exhibition held in June at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC.
