Pittsboro, NC - Perry Harrison students, staff, and parents celebrated a healthy and active school year with the Mariner's Family Fitness Fun Event on Tuesday, June 7. Attendees participated in numerous active events, including fun runs, bucket head toss, hula hooping, soccer kick challenges, jump roping, beach ball taping, and high caper throwing contest.

“The Family Fitness Fun Event was an exciting way to celebrate the commitment to healthy lifestyles our school community has demonstrated this year,” commented Principal Janice Frazier.

Healthy lifestyles have been a focus for students and staff at Perry Harrison throughout the year. The school received a Let's Move in Schools grant (formerly Be Active grant) that allowed them to complete the following fitness related projects: purchase and install five outdoor fitness stations; clear an existing nature trail on the campus; and design and construct a bridge for the trail. In addition to the grant related projects, the school's wellness team organized a variety of experiences to encourage increased activity levels for students, including a Club Fit before school program, High Mileage Club walk/run challenge, and monthly active classroom recognitions. The wellness team also offered staff members health and fitness challenges that included on site cardio classes taught by Perry Harrison staff members, and nutrition and exercise seminars.

Fitness program organizers noted appreciation for support their efforts have received. Perry Harrison staff and students look forward to continuing their fitness efforts next year. The school is grateful to its PTA and Mariner families, Chatham County Health Department, Chatham Partnership for Children, Chatham County Sheriff's Office, and Chatham YMCA for their support and partnership in the wellness initiatives.

Please contact Jennifer Sipe, Perry Harrison physical education teacher, if you have questions about the school initiatives or feel you can contribute to future projects.
