Six Chatham students accepted to Governor's School

Chatham County, NC - Six students will be representing Chatham County Schools at the 2006 Governor's School. The experience is a six-week, residential program for intellectually gifted high school students.

The student, his or her high school, and the subject area on which each will focus are:

Governor's School West
Heather Beau- Northwood/Dance
Mary Grace Fitts- Jordan-Matthews/English
Stephen Shore- Northwood/Drama

Governor's School East
Siler Bryan- Northwood/Natural Science
Morgan Isenhour- Northwood/French
Melissa Mitchell- Chatham Central/Instrumental Music

Nominees are selected in a similar process to college admissions. Committees choose between applicants. Performing and visual arts students also audition before judges.

The Governor's School of North Carolina is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically and intellectually gifted high school students in the nation. The program is located on two campuses: Governor's School West at Salem College in Winston-Salem and Governor's School East at Meredith College in Raleigh. The program offers a curriculum for 800 North Carolina students providing classes that blend intellectual discussion with practical application of theory.
