Siler City, NC - Chatham County Schools recognized its 2005-2006 Teachers of the Year and 2005 retirees during a banquet in Siler City on Tuesday, September 12. This year there were fourteen teachers and thirty-three retirees in the group of honorees.

Each individual school Teacher of the Year received a plaque and a check from the Chatham County Board of Education. Board of Education Chairman Allan Zimmerman presented these to each individual on behalf of the Board. Superintendent Ann Hart shared comments written by the teachers in the portfolios they submitted as part of the Teacher of the Year process.

The Chatham County Teacher of the Year is Keri Randolph, a science teacher at Northwood High School. Randolph received an additional plaque and check from the Board of Education as the county representative. Additionally, she will have the opportunity to attend a professional conference or workshop this school year. Randolph will move on to the regional level of Teacher of the Year recognition.

A special donation to Randolph's classroom was made by Rusty Edmister, an employee of the IBM Corporation. As part of IBM's commitment to education, it offers its active employees and retirees a way to help accredited, not-for-profit K-12 schools with IBM computer equipment. The program is known as the IBM K-12 Matching Grant Program. IBM matches the employee donation 5-to-1 in new, state-of-the art computer equipment that is sent to the school designated by the employee. Mr. Edmister made this donation in memory of Roland E. Horne, a former finance officer in Chatham County Schools. Mr. Horne was the father of one of Mr. Edmister's good friends at IBM, Mark Evans. The computer will be given to the 2005-2006 Teacher of the Year in Chatham County with a brass tag stating "In loving memory of Roland E. Horne". The computer will remain in Randolph's classroom as long as she teaches here. Edmister, Evans, and Faye Horne, widow of Roland Horne, were able to attend the banquet.

“My passion for science is infectious. Additionally, I think all students can appreciate science because everyone has an innate curiosity about the world around them… I encourage my students to ask questions; I challenge them to risk, to collaborate, and to think… I believe that my job is to make my teaching relevant in order to impact my students' lives, and that means valuing their opinions and perspectives,” wrote Randolph in her portfolio.

Retirees were acknowledged by the Board of Education for their years of service in education. Zimmerman presented each retiree with a plaque after Lynne Johnson, Executive Director of Human Resources, read memories and/or plans each retiree in attendance had shared with the Human Resources Department.
