Bonlee, NC - On Monday evening, September 23, 2013 the Chatham County PTA Thrift Store board held an annual meeting at Bonlee School. Refreshments were provided and almost every seat in the library was occupied. Principals from across the county were in attendance, many accompanied by school PTA representatives. While this number of attendees is rare for a Thrift Store meeting, board members were not surprised by the large number of visitors. This meeting was special in that over $559,000 was to be distributed to individual schools.

The PTA Thrift Shop celebrated 30 years in business in April 2013. Over that time, the organization has provided over seven million dollars to Chatham County Schools. These funds are used by schools to fund field trips, enhance technology, improve facilities, and provide teacher grants. The Thrift Shop has a small cadre of paid employees but relies on community volunteers to sort, clean, and function as “elves” for the stores. Each school has a volunteer coordinator who assists in designating work groups and events to raise funds for the school and individual organizations.

Board of Education Chair, David Hamm said, “The Thrift Shop Board, store managers, and the countless volunteers are definitely a beacon of light not only in Chatham, but the entire state!! Once again, many thanks to all those that have made the Thrift Shop a part of our community!”

Bennett School Principal, Dan Barnwell walked away with the largest check of the evening. Volunteers for Bennett School logged over 8613 hours resulting in a disbursement for the school of over $62,880. School disbursement amounts follow:
