Siler City, NC - On Saturday morning, November 13, the first annual Ram Run 5K at Chatham Middle School was a success with over fifty runners and walkers participating. Those who entered were students, school district employees, and community members. Swoops, the soccer team mascot of the Raleigh-based Carolina Railhawks also came to cheer on the group.

With the assistance of local law enforcement blocking the route at intersections, participants came out of the school driveway and turned left down South Second Avenue Extension for a mile trek down and back. Once back on the school campus, the walkers and runners completed the 3.1 miles of the 5K on the new campus crosscountry trail.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the athletic program at Chatham Middle. The school is a Just Push Play grant recipient. This has played a large role in the trail and the 5K.

“We were delighted at the turnout for our first 5K and look forward to it growing in years to come,” commented Brayton Leonhardt, the assistant principal at Chatham Middle and event organizer.

Laurin Turner, a senior at Jordan-Matthews High School, is doing her senior graduation project on the Ram Run 5K and has worked with her mentor, Leonhardt, on race logistics.

“I was impressed at how many registrants you had for a first year event and enjoyed the atmosphere,” wrote participant Wendi Pillars in an email to Leonhardt after the event.
