Pittsboro, NC - Chatham County Schools officially opened its newest school, Margaret B. Pollard Middle School, on Monday, January 3. Over 480 students and approximately 50 faculty and staff members were on campus together after having been split between two other campuses for the first half of the school year while construction was completed.

The school serves grades six through eight and is named for a Chatham County native who served as a Chatham County Commissioner from 1994 until 2004 and had a strong commitment to community service. Mrs. Pollard passed away in September of 2009.

The school size is 120,000 square feet on a site that is approximately 31 acres in the edge of the Briar Chapel development in northeastern Chatham County. The school has a large “gallery” at the main entrance leading to a hallway that runs north/south the length of the building connecting to three classroom wings. The high school-sized gymnasium is air-conditioned with bleachers on both sides of the court. Each classroom has a SMART Board and a mounted projector to allow lessons to be taught using up-to-date technology.

“Green” features are a key element of the school construction. Daylighting is an important aspect of the school. Classrooms have large windows. Solatubes are also used to bring in exterior light. Classrooms have motion detectors to sense the need for lighting. Pollard is an entirely geo-thermal building. Heating and air-conditioning systems use ground-sourced water from 170 wells located 400 feet below the soccer field. Rooms in the school have HVAC units that act as condensing units. The school district is actively pursuing LEED Gold certification for Margaret B. Pollard Middle School, which would make it the first LEED Gold certified middle school in the state.
