Ten teachers in Chatham County Schools have recently earned National Board Certification. The ten, who teach at various schools in the district, completed a multi-month program of professional improvement that was directly tied to their daily classroom teaching.

These teachers join twenty-one other educators currently teaching in the school system, bringing the total number of National Board Certified teachers to thirty-one. North Carolina has over 6,600 teachers who have earned the prestigious certification.

The mission of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is to advance the quality of teaching and learning through rigorous standards that include teaching reflection through journaling, videotaping classroom settings,

The NBPTS website states, “Teachers who have participated in National Board Certification have overwhelmingly stated it is the most powerful professional development experience of their careers. They say the experience changes them as professionals and that through the process they deepen their content knowledge and develop, master, and reflect on new approaches to working with their students.” Chatham County educators who have earned the Certification have echoed this statement.

The State of North Carolina subsidizes the fee for teachers who successfully complete the National Board Certification process and gives candidates up to three days of release time to complete portfolio and assessment center exercises. In addition, National Board Certified educators receive a twelve percent salary increase.
