Chatham County Schools continues to come to terms with the empty place in the school system family left by the untimely death of Michael Trifaro, principal of Northwood High School, who passed away on June 5.

Two memorial funds set up for the Trifaro family are still active. Donations can be made at any First Citizens Bank to the Erin Trifaro Memorial Fund for Michael Trifaro. Another fund, the Michael Trifaro Memorial Fund, has been set up at Central Carolina Bank. The CCB address is P.O. Box 399, Pittsboro, NC, 27312. The CCB account will be closed within the next few weeks to allow all donations to go into a single account at First Citizens Bank.

In spite of many school system employees being home for the summer vacation, they have responded to the Trifaro family during this time of immense loss. For example, staff at Pittsboro Elementary School donated over $800 to one of the memorial funds. The students and staff of Northwood High School have continually found ways of memorializing "Trif" and helping his family.

Dr. Larry Mabe, Superintendent, expressed his appreciation to employees of Chatham County Schools saying, "Your actions as a system family are particularly touching to me as I have seen your response to the loss of Mike Trifaro at Northwood. Our system family has pulled together and has worked so hard to help each other during this tragedy. This is why so many of us work here. The care and compassion expressed by so many to Mike's family and to each of us is so important. I have never been more proud to be an employee of Chatham County Schools than over the last several days. Your courage, compassion, genuine care for each other, and your actions have shown over and over how fortunate the community is to have you working together for our young people."

Members of the Trifaro family, many of whom live outside North Carolina, have shared with staff and members of the Board of Education how much the response of the school system has meant to them.

Cards and other messages of condolence for the Trifaro family can be sent to the central office of Chatham County Schools in care of Beth Snider, Public Relations Coordinator, at P.O. Box 128, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

"We have already taken a number of cards to the Trifaro family. The response from current and former students, families, staff, and the community has been very heartening," commented Mabe.
