Chatham well represented at State Junior Beta Club Convention

Greensboro, NC - Six schools from Chatham County Schools had chapters that attended the North Carolina Junior Beta Club convention in Greensboro held February 4 and 5. 2008 marked the sixteenth year the annual state convention has been held.

Thirty-two students from Bennett, thirteen from Bonlee, twenty from Chatham Central, Chatham Middle, twenty from J.S. Waters, and twenty-four from Silk Hope participated in the convention with their advisors. In addition to attending conference sessions, many of the students also participated in competitions.

Beverly Browne, Principal of J.S. Waters School, noted how much students from the various Chatham County clubs encouraged each other during on-stage recognitions.

Bennett placed second in the state in the group talent, craft, speech, and photography competitions. The group talent team was comprised of eighth graders Bryant Barbery, Shaylan Miller, and April Warner, and seventh graders Izabela Webster, Christian Hackney, and Clark Bartee. Eighth grader April Warren had a piece of sculpture in the craft competition. Seventh grader Ashley Gaines was the speech competitor. Sixth grader Tyler Welch was the photography competitor. Eighth grader Jordan Brady placed third in the spelling bee. All thirty-two students that attended from Bennett participated in the competitive events during the convention. Molly Jones, a club advisor, expressed the club’s appreciation to band director John Haas for working with band students that competed.

Bonlee seventh grader Kimie Hinrichs participated in the spelling bee. Seventh grader Killian Wustrow competed in the geography contest. Three Bonlee students participated in the scrapbook event: seventh graders Kelsey Hayes and Erin Sugg and eighth grader Taylor Burke. Katelan Webster, a seventh grader, had an entry in the photography event while Loriann Shelton, also a seventh grader, had a piece in the cross stitch event. Bonlee had a team in the quiz bowl competition. Team members were eighth graders Kevin Foushee, Angel Gayton, Michael Koszulinski, and Jalen Wiley. Seventh grader Alyssa Mathewson was a team alternate. Seventh grader Victor Stinson competed in the math competition.

Macon Moore, a freshman at Chatham Central, placed third in the sculpture event. Tristan Stinson, also a freshman, was a finalist in the single/group talent competition.

The Chatham Middle Junior Beta Club, comprised of eighth graders, had fifteen students attend the convention. They included Oscar Avilez, Ruby Benitez, Samantha Brykailo, Berenice Espinoza, Fernanda Gonzalez, Jessica Gumucio, Zambra Gutierrez, Chase Johnson, Madeline Larios, Leslie Morales, Shadelee Montano, Andrea Rodriguez, Cori Teague, Danubio Vazquez, and Nathan Woolard. Members competed in the banner, poetry, poster, geography quiz bowl, and art categories. Four took part in the Leadership Workshop.

J.S. Waters competed in fourteen competition areas. They included arts and crafts events and competitions in academic areas.

Silk Hope School placed first in the living literature competition. The team was comprised of two seventh graders, Alison Lindley and Andrew Myles, and two eighth graders, Daniel Burris and Rebecca Glosson. In the arts and crafts category, Silk Hope eighth grader Josh Nunn placed first in woodworking with his music box creation, and Olivia Moody, a Silk Hope eighth grader, placed second in needlepoint. The Silk Hope chapter sang a song with lyrics by eighth graders Taylor Fox and Rebecca Glosson that earned a third place finish in the “SongFest” event.

First place winners will be eligible to compete in the National Junior Beta Club convention that will be held June 18-21 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
