Bonlee - On Saturday, August 21, local youth camped out to support Bonlee School. The “Cardboard Campout” was an opportunity for local youth to come together to support Bonlee School’s new FUEL UP Program.

FUEL UP is an acronym for Food Until Everything Looks Up. The goal of the program is to ensure all students have food on weekends and holidays during the school year. There are multiple FUEL UP programs in schools across Chatham County.

Meroney United Methodist Church (UMC), along with the youth, sponsored the community campout to help the school and community achieve their goal. There were thirty-seven students and volunteers who camped out in the elements to try and understand how it would be to rely on community for food and support in time of need. With church, community and the school working together, approximately 1,800 food items were collected during this event.

“I feel blessed to be apart of such a supportive community,” said Sherry Thurman, a Bonlee teacher and Meroney UMC Youth Director.

Bonlee School is also developing a new club called the A.R.K. Club which is a service club that provides “Acts of Random Kindness” to any group in need.

“We are very excited about the A.R.K Club and the FUEL UP program at Bonlee School,” said Principal Daniel Haithcox. “We are looking forward to helping kids and our community, while also providing an excellent service learning opportunity for our students.”
