Bonlee, NC - The library media program at Bonlee Elementary School promotes student reading through various reading initiatives. The grades K-2 Read-A-Thon is one of the reading initiatives sponsored by the school library media program, which involves parents as active participants in their children’s reading efforts and encourages all students in kindergarten through second grade to engage in reading.

As part of the Read-A-Thon, the students read at least fifteen books each month and recorded the titles of the books on a reading sheet. The students turn in their reading sheets to their respective teachers each month. At the end of six months, those students who turned in their completed reading sheets each month for a total of six months are recognized in the school reading award ceremony on Friday, April 23.

Ken Smith from WRAL-TV was the guest of honor for the 2010 reading award ceremony. Smith commended the students’ reading achievements in a speech and presented the reading medals to the students.

The school principal, Daniel Haithcox, recognized and praised the teachers, students, and the parents for supporting the reading achievement of Bonlee students.

The event was well attended by parents, friends, and families of Bonlee students.
