On April 12, the seventeenth annual Junior Quiz Bowl was held at Chatham Central High School with grades 5-8 competing for the 2005 championship. The Junior Quiz Bowl Competition was conducted as part of Chatham County Schools 2005 Media Celebration, sponsored by the school system's library media programs. The Junior Quiz Bowl team at Bonlee emerged as the winner of the competition defeating Bennett with a final score of 245 to 145. Students demonstrated their knowledge in a variety of areas, answering questions from the fields of science, math, language and many others. The first session was judged by Linda Clark, Barry Hayes and Beth McCullough and the second by Sharon Brewer, Beth McCullough and Martha Swift. Jordan-Matthews High School Media Coordinator, Rose Pate, served as the moderator for both sessions.

Two teams at a time were set as rivals until the nine teams - representing Bennett School, Bonlee School, Chatham Middle School, Horton Middle School, J.S. Waters School, Moncure School, North Chatham School, Perry Harrison School and Silk Hope School - were reduced down to two, Bennett and Bonlee.

The Bonlee team, first place winners in the competition, is comprised of students Janice Daniels, Kevin Foushee, Sarah Johnson, Nikki Roscoe, Tyler Edwards, Scott Harvey and Macon Moore with Jane Andrews, Juanita Bowman and Linda Johnson as their sponsors.

The second place Bennett School team, sponsored by Carol Purvis, Mary Gleissner and Margaret Smith, is comprised of students Levi Austin, Jordan Brady, B.J. Brewer, Julianna Gaines, Eli Brady, Kristin Brady, Ethan Ferguson and Jessica King.

Third place honors went to Chatham Middle School's team. The team is sponsored by Harriet Sherman and Stacey Hypes and includes students Cal Brewer, Alex Harris, Olivia Ocampo, Tyler Sauls, Deanna Fox, Nick Holloway, Hannia Preciado and Tevin Thompson.

The celebration also included a Young Authors Award program, which recognized outstanding writing by students in grades K-8. Celebrating its seventeenth year, the program allows students to write, illustrate and publish their own books. The completed volumes are then read and judged at the school and county levels. Judges Mitch Stensland, assistant principal at Chatham Central, and Kelly Eldridge, visual arts teacher at Chatham Middle, selected winners in three categories. The winner in the novels category was Bonlee School 6th grader Ramy Sugg for “A Mylant's Decision.” The winner in grades K-4 was J.S. Waters School 4th grader Cayley Oldham for “Poems, Again and Again.” The winner in the grade 5-8 division was North Chatham School 8th grader Raegan Moore for “A Contrast of Two Lives: The Acceptable and the Unacceptable.” Each school also had a project on display as part of the Chatham County Schools Media Showcase that is funded by Federal Funds (ESEA Title V).
