Pittsboro, NC - Chatham County Schools has been in the process of redistricting the elementary attendance zones for the Siler City and Silk Hope areas in preparation for the opening of Virginia Cross Elementary School this fall.

A redistricting committee, comprised of parent representatives from Silk Hope and Siler City Elementary, principals of the two schools, Board of Education members, central office staff, and Superintendent Ann Hart, worked from December through early February to supply suggested zones for attendance at Siler City Elementary, Silk Hope, and the new Virginia Cross Elementary. The OR/Ed. Lab in Raleigh had created optimal scenarios from which the committee worked.

During its meeting on Monday, February 26, the Chatham County Board of Education voted to use scenario D in redistricting. (That map is attached to this press release.) Families of students affected by the redistricting will receive a letter from the central office.

The Board also voted to grandfather in rising Silk Hope seventh and eighth graders to give them the option of remaining at Silk Hope. The grandfathering does not include the siblings of the seventh and eighth graders. Families wishing to choose the grandfathering option will need to complete and submit a transfer request form through the Superintendent's office. Impacted students will receive specific details about this process in the near future; no action is required at this time. One of the requirements for transfer students is that their families provide transportation.

Siler City and Silk Hope area families needing to register a child for kindergarten can do so at either Siler City Elementary School or Silk Hope School during the countywide kindergarten registration week of March 19-23.
