Board of Education meeting summary for November 13

Goldston, NC - The Chatham County Board of Education met at J.S. Waters School on Thursday, November 13, for a regular session. The following agenda items were addressed:

Good News
• Superintendent Robert Logan noted several items of interest that can be found on the district’s press release site.
• Mr. Logan recognized outgoing Board members Norman Clark and Holly Duncan for their service to the school district over the past four years and presented each with a plaque.
• Jack Walker, a CPA with Dixon Hughes, shared the 2007-2008 audit report for Chatham County Schools.
• Dr. Robin McCoy, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, reported on recently released ABCs state testing results. (See details on the district homepage under “Achievement Data” or “Press Releases.”)

New Business
• A representative from the Chatham County Economic Development Corporation gave a presentation about Joint Elected Boards. A strategic plan meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 18, at 6:30 p.m. on the Pittsboro CCCC campus.
• Rita Spina with the Chatham County Citizens for Effective Communication gave a presentation on how government works. She discussed an ongoing program with students from Jordan-Matthews High School. She also mentioned an upcoming class for adults from February-March of 2009.
• The Board approved federal and local current expense budget amendments presented by Chief Operating Officer Susan Little.
• The Board reviewed School Improvement Plans for the following schools:
➢ Chatham Central High School
➢ Chatham Middle School
➢ J.S. Waters School
➢ Jordan-Matthews High School
➢ North Chatham School
➢ Northwood High School
➢ Perry Harrison School
The Board then approved the School Improvement Plans for all sixteen of the district’s schools.
• The Board approved revisions to two of its policies: #5220 (Collections & Solicitations) and and #2310 (Public Participation at Board Meetings).
• Mr. Logan explained that one of the district’s older buses will be replaced through the state replacement process.

Old Business
• Mr. Logan and the Board discussed after school programs in the district moving from being run by the school district to being run by the YMCA. The Board then approved the YMCA taking over after school programs next school year.

• Mr. Logan told the Chatham Board members that the State Board of Education reviewed and approved class overage requests from Bennett, Northwood, and Silk Hope. The Harrison request was not approved.
