Pittsboro, NC - The Chatham County Board of Education held a meeting on Monday, February 11, 2008, in the central office boardroom.

Board members will discuss and develop a schedule to attend planning board meetings.

Staff from the North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA) discussed results of the superintendent surveys, NCSBA conducted for the Board of Education in January. There was a survey for staff and a survey for the community.

Deb McManus shared information from a recent NCSBA Personnel Law Conference she attended.

Holly Duncan, other Board members, and Dr. Robin McCoy, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, discuss issues, concerns and suggestions regarding high school scheduling. Duncan talked about different scheduling options. Input from students, parents and staff was also mentioned. The general consensus of the Board that school faculties should be encouraged to explore creative scheduling options (year-long advanced placement courses, pairing two courses within a block period, etc.) while overall remaining on the block schedule.

Representatives from SFL+a presented preliminary views of the new middle school building. The Board and SFL+A also discussed an updated site work schedule to work toward completing the new school by April, 2010 instead of the original date of June, 2010. They will finalize decisions at the next Board meeting.

Dr. Hal House, of Integrated Water Strategies, presented a report regarding integrated water strategies for Chatham County Schools.

Tom Calhoun shared options for timber removal at the new high school site on Jack Bennett Road. Nothing moved forward at this time.

The Board approved the contract from Hobbs Architects for the renovations at Northwood High School and North Chatham School with the stipulation to allow minor negotiating changes and an to fix incorrect word in the current version.

The Board approved the following fundraising requests submitted by schools:
Jordan-Matthews: FBLA cookie dough sale
Northwood: National Honor Society fundraiser: student/staff basketball game & Mr. & Mrs. Charger event
Northwood: volleyball program summer camp
