Siler City, NC - The Chatham County Board of Education held a meeting on Monday, January 28, 2008, at Chatham Middle School.

Vice-Chairman Norman Clark led a discussion about making playground funding part of building new elementary schools and finished fields as part of building new middle schools. The Board voted to begin the process of amending its policy that had not previously included these.

Susan Little, Chief Finance Officer, presented financial statements and budget amendments. The Board approved the amendments.

The Board held a discussion about the Briar Chapel middle school site. As a result of the district’s request, the architects will move the occupation date of the new middle school from June of 2010 to April of 2010. The Board wants to ensure that the new middle school is ready for use as the 2010 school year begins. The Board will need to negotiate an early site package to expedite the process.

The Board talked about various waste management options for the new high school site on Jack Bennett road. Information is still being gathered before final decisions are made.

The Board voted for the district to participate in the School Connectivity Initiative (SCI) Consortium. Doing so allows the district to continue to make use of the federal e-rate reimbursement program that subsidizes telecommunications and Internet access for schools and libraries. As part of the SCI Consortium, Chatham County Schools will be connected to the NC Research and Education Network, which is a high-speed data network among state universities and other sites.

The Board approved the following fundraising requests submitted by schools:
Chatham Central – DECA candy sale
Chatham Central – DECA data match survey results
Horton – band food sale
Northwood – baseball camp
Northwood – FBLA Valentine’s flower & message sale
Perry Harrison – winter middle school dance

In an informational presentation, Dr. Tina S. Hester, Chief Personnel Officer, and Susan Little gave an update of findings and recommendations after conducting an internal review of classified salary schedules in comparison with recommendations from the state.
