Pittsboro, NC - The Chatham County Board of Education held a meeting on Monday, August 20, 2007, at 7:30 p.m. in the central office board room.
Board Chair Norman Clark called the meeting to order, and the Board adopted the amended meeting agenda. The Board approved amended closed and open session minutes from its August 6 meeting.
During the Board of Education Sharing, Gerald Totten talked about attending a Commissioners work session earlier in the day. Kathie Russell discussed the goals of a county land banking committee comprised of Commissioner George Lucier, Russell, and Tracy Burnett. Holly Duncan agreed with comments Totten made about Board cohesiveness when working with the Commissioners for school support. Deb McManus commented on how she had enjoyed the facility needs committee tours and the new teacher orientation at Horton Middle. Norman Clark had information about opportunities through the NC School Boards Association and National School Boards Association. Clark also mentioned a school surplus option.
For her Superintendent's Report, Dr. Hart noted a back to school video created by the Public Relations Department that will be shown on August 21 in all school staff meetings. She explained the recent release of No Child Left Behind Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) results. Hart highlighted last week's administrative retreat that had multiple sessions related to academics in the district. Hart mentioned district features in two publications, Chatham Living and Meredith Magazine. She concluded by giving an update on the progress of the Virginia Cross Elementary School campus.

The Board discussed the job description for the Assistant Superintendent of Auxiliary Services.
Jim Davis, Chief Technology Officer, made a request to declare the usable components of the telephone systems at the central office and North Chatham School as surplus equipment. The Board approved the request.
The Board discussed a school-by-school list of needs from the Facility Needs Committee list and the Board of Education list of school priorities for the use of potential funding from the Chatham County Board of Commissioners. Principals in attendance at the meeting explained their schools' top priorities.
The Board approved Policy 6121: Students' Mental and Emotional Health Policy.
Members discussed and approved the revised Board of Education 1000 (Governing Principles) and 2000 (Board Operations) policy series.
