Board of Education meeting summary for May 4

Pittsboro, NC - The Chatham County Board of Education met at the central office on Monday, May 4. The following were the business items on the agenda.

Paul Braxton facility – The Board discussed using the Paul Braxton building as a pre-k site and moving the district’s pre-k classes currently housed there to the campuses of Siler City Elementary School and Virginia Cross Elementary School. The Board will discuss this agenda item further at its May 11th meeting.

Strategic Plan – Superintendent Robert Logan shared the latest version of the district’s Strategic Plan with the Board. The Board will discuss this agenda item further at its May 11th meeting.

Board meeting dates 2009-10 – Members discussed the Board meeting calendar for the upcoming school year. The Board will discuss this agenda item further at its May 11th meeting.

The Board received financial statements and a budget update – The Board received quarterly financial statements ending March 31, 2009. Susan Little, Chief Operating Officer, also discussed the latest information she has received from state officials regarding the budget situation in the current budget cycle.

Update on high schools – Derrick Jordan, Director of Secondary Education, and the high school principals shared information relative to data trends, course offerings,
demographics, and challenges of the district’s three traditional high schools and one alternative high school.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) – Terry Greenlund, who coordinates the AVID program in Chatham County Schools, shared program information with the Board. Several AVID teachers and students were also part of the presentation.

Graduation Project – The Board voted to move forward as planned with putting a graduation project required for high school graduation in place for high school students starting with the Class of 2010.

Proposal for Environmental Services at Bus Garage – The Board received information about the district’s need to correct underground petroleum storage tanks (USTs) at the bus garage that are not in compliance with North Carolina UST regulations. Members voted for the district to immediately move forward with the proposal it has in order to comply and hopefully avoid penalties from NCDENR.

2009-10 school lunch prices – Board member Gerald Totten expressed interest in the Board revisiting its decision to raise lunch prices for the upcoming school year by 25 cents. There was no additional discussion about the issue.

Speed limit reduction resolution for Alston Bridge Road – The Board approved a
resolution requesting the North Carolina Department of Transportation reduce the
speed limit on Alston Bridge Road in front of and within one-half mile east and west of
the entrance to Virginia Cross Elementary School in Siler City from 55 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour.

Superintendent Logan announced that, effective July 1st, Janice Frazier will become the principal of Perry Harrison School, and Tracy Fowler will become the principal of Chatham Middle School. Kelli Hulsey has been chosen as the new Director of Testing and Accountability for the district. Frazier is currently the principal of Silk Hope School. Fowler is currently the principal of Bonlee School. The district will now begin the process of filling the principalships at Silk Hope and Bonlee. Hulsey is currently the Director of Testing and Accountability in Lee County Schools.
